Hi all can I ask who has hcm passed down through genetics. My mum suddenly passed away 2 weeks ago of hcm, she was only 59. she had no idea she even had heart issues, wasn’t ill at all or anything. I’m in such shock and panicking that it may be passed down. I’m going to the doctors tomorrow to ask for testing. Is there any advice anyone can give me please or specific questions to ask my doctor tomorrow. Thank you for reading x

I'm so sorry to read of your mum's passing. I have apical HCM (in the apex of left ventricle) , diagnosed 18 months ago, and was told I'd inherited it. My mum had heart failure, which could have progressed from HCM. It can be seen on an echocardiogram so you could ask for one. You could also contact CardiomyopathyUK charity. I went to their annual conference in Liverpool last October, which was great. All the best. Clare
Oh wow bless you, are you able to control your condition with medication etc. I’ve been to the doctors today, she’s checked my pulse and then had me sent straight to the nurse for an emergency ecg because my heart was skipping beats, after checking the results she had a message sent to reception to say I was ok to leave and to wait for an appointment to come through from cardiology? Im not sure on the results but I’m guessing if they were bad she would have called me back in. My son was screaming by that point as we’d been waiting in the doctors for 2hrs 40mins so I just left. Now I wished I’d asked what the results were.x
Oh you poor soul. What a dreadful shock. I am so sorry about your mum. You are doing the right thing in asking for testing.
Thank you, it’s been a really weird couple
Of weeks, I don’t think we’ve had chance to process any of it yet. Where she lived so the autopsy and funerals do quick you don’t get a chance to think. Then there’s the shock that we may have inherited this illness we didn’t even know she had.xx
Well there';s one good thing that's come out of it. You can now check for inheritance and can be monitored and treated to improve your chances. She may well have saved your lives.
