My asthma Consultant referred me for an echocardiogram and I’ve been diagnosed as follows “Globally mildly impaired left valve systolic function ” mildly being the best word! I got the diagnosis the day I was leaving UK for 5 weeks so haven’t had the opportunity to discuss with GP even. Looking on line it seems it could be early stages of heart failure. A bit scary. Anyone know anything about this condition please?

Hi langleyjh,
Echocardiograms are a really good way at looking at the overall structure of the heart. It's main purpose is to see how well the heart muscle is working and to see if the heart valves are opening and closing as they should. The results often sound very technical, but don't always give a diagnosis as such - just an idea of what is going on in your heart. Depending on the reason for your doctor referring you( did you mention any new or worsening symptoms to do with your asthma?) may indicate the need for more tests when you get back to the UK. If they feel it's necessary you may be referred to a cardiologist for review. I would suggest keeping away from the internet as it often causes far more anxiety than necessary!
Try to keep as active as you can,eat healthily and keep an eye on your blood pressure. These are really important factors for maintaining your heart health.
If you want to chat things through further with one of the cardiac nurses on the Heart Helpline the number is 0300-330-3311. There is someone there to talk to Monday - Friday from 9-5.
I hope I've helped.
Take care,
Philippa
