I suffered a mild heart attack in Dec 2016 and since then I been trying to improve my health and fitness in an attempt to prevent further heart problems. Following cardiac rehab. I joined a 12 week health and well-being program run by my local football club which broadly followed on from the rehab., did a 13 mile sponsored walk to raise £1797 for the rehab (pretty chuffed with that) and more recently started jogging the local weekly 5km parkrun and joining in circuit training group – I would never have thought any of this possible just a year ago!
I have written a blog which covers all aspects of my recovery year and the progress I have made. I wrote this in the hope that it might offer help, encouragement or inspiration to others who have recently suffered a heart attack or anything similar.
Just read the 1st post on you’re blog. I remember being in the same unit at Wycombe and being told the same thing a couple of weeks ago really shocked me as I thought I was in good nick and only 41. I had two sents fitted there in Wycombe the next day and was home that same night..
just wanted to ask if it’s ok, after the 1st attack 3.5 years ago did you change you’re diet etc??
I’ve stopped smoking and cut out all the bad foods I use to eat so I’m hoping that will help. Also have my 1st meeting at the rehab clinic at Wycombe tomorrow.
2013 I had quite a severe angina attack while walking from Mill End School to the football ground where paramedics treated me and advised that I see my GP first thing next morning. The GP sent me straight to the Cardiac unit at Wycombe hospital and they diagnosed unstable angina and inserted my first stent, I was released the next day.
I did the physical element of the rehab. and probably didn’t take the warning serious enough, missing the classroom lessons on healthy eating. I made some token changes to my diet, cutting out crisps and reducing high fat content foods and drinking less beer but nothing to the extent I did after my heart attack, I have also massively increased my exercise levels now.
Rehab can really rebuild your confidence if you are at all worried about over exertion leading to a heart attack. Attend the healthy heart lessons as well as the physical exercises, you will pick up a lot of useful information to help make those lifestyle changes.
Say hi to Matt if he is around for me, I'll probably see him on the Summer sponsored walk.
