Whilst I was in hospital I was asked if I would be interested in helping participating in medical students cardiology teaching and exams. So after completion the relevant paperwork I was accepted into the programme.
In March I was a cardiac case for the final year medical exams. I was initially seen by the two consultant examiners (one a cardiologist and one a general surgeon). After this a student came into the cubicle and had approx ten mins to ask me questions, examine me and then answer questions from the examiners. I was there for the morning and it was very interesting to see how the different students coped both with the stress of the situation and examining me.
Yesterday I helped at the 4th year cardiology teaching. This time I was seen by 3 groups of 10 students. A student took my history and then the lecturer, a senior doctor ,discussed my case with the students. Finally they all took their turn turn and listened to my heart sounds. Again really interesting and I learned more about my situation.
My reason for posting this is, if you are asked to participate it is well worth it and an easy way to give back .
