Ceasearn Scar Itching

I had an emergency ceasearn on 24th February 2020 and my scar it is itching and its unbearable at time. I never received my post natal check due to Covid 19 and I can't get to see a doctor, so only getting phone consultations which is no help as they can't suggest anything. I'm at my wits end with it. Anyone else had this? Any tips before I go insane?

Hi! I havent had a c-section but I used to work as a therapist in a scar management clinic in a burns centre so thought i’d share some advice we would offer to patients! I’d treat patients with surgical scars also so i think a c section scar would fall into this catagory?

Scars alter the skins natural ability to self lubricate and need a lot of help. A lot of time itchiness is from dryness, or over healing (which essentially what a scar is). Try massaging in circular motions with enough pressure so your fingertips just about turn white, along the scar for a few minutes twice a day, more if your able (doubt it with a newborn! 🙈) use a non perfumed gentle cream or vaseline, whatever suits your skin, and keep the cream cool in the fridge. The coldness can also help with the itching.

There’s no evidence things like ‘bio oil’ actually do anything other than moisturise the skin which we know is good for scars, so wont hurt if you purchase. The best evidence for scar management is the use of silicone, and although expensive you can buy this online at amazon. Things like scarsil, anything that is silicone based. The higher the content of silicone the better! If you get this, just smooth a small later of silicone on the skin twice a day, no need to rub, no need to use huge amounts because it makes it tacky and comes off. A thin layer is perfect. It should soften the scar over time and make it feel less firm and bumpy.

No thank you for rambling! It's nice someone has taken the time to reply and actually give me something useful. I have I'll grab some of that silicone stuff, I don't care what it costs I've been suffering with this. You've taken more care than my doctor. Thank you xxx

You’re so welcome! In my experience GPs werent overly supportive with scar management, there’s little understanding of how scars can really affect someones daily life. Silicone products used to be available on prescription but they’ve clamped down.

Good luck! Frustratingly it does take time, months to see results really but hopefully the relief from itching will be fairly quick xx

This was really useful. my c-section is coming up to a year ago but the last couple of days the scar has been quite itchy and the skin around it is really dry, I'll be giving your advice a shot
