Acid reflux/GORD, Asthma - Slippery Elm Bark

My asthma is made worse by acid reflux. I take omeprazole but have heard that slippery elm bark powder is good for acid reflux as it can coat the oesophagus and may prevent irritation and inflammation. I am seeing my consultant this month so will ask him. Has anyone used it?

I've used it in capsule form, the powder apparently mixes up to a slimy consistency which I guess in part is where its name comes from. It apparently doesn't have any interaction with any other medications you're taking. It's hard to say if it's helped me. On the label it says to take as a matter of course before a meal, whereas I've been taking it as I feel the need. Maybe it works more effectively as a preventative rather than a remedy. I also think I read it has no undesirable side effects. So maybe worth a try? Good luck 👍 I hope it works for you.

I note on a previous post of yours that you took high strength probiotics, were these helpful with reflux?

I don't think that was me. Sorry to not be able to help on that one. As for the slippery elm, at times I was convinced it really works, but other times not so much. But, would things be worse had I not taken it 🤔

Good morning, I have severe refractory eosinophilic asthma, Churg Strauss/EGPA & also used to have horrendous problems with acid reflux.

I tried all of the usual suspects (omaprazole etc etc) but nothing really helped until I had to have fundoplication surgery - problem solved.

I had to have two endoscopies to quantify how bad the reflux was etc as it is major surgery but thankfully for me it was a great success and no more acid reflux as well as being protected from Barrett’s oesophagus etc.

Good luck!! 👌👍

I would ask for a gastroscopy as you may have a hiatus hernia. I also had acid reflux issues and am now taking Pantoprazole which works much better than all the others I tried over the years

I used to take slippery elm, can’t say it helped much. But it’s always worth a try. I’m now on Lansoprazole which is very effective.

Hope things improve for you.
