Hi

Has anyone here purchased a paediatric finger pulse oximeter, if so I would appreciate any recommendations as I want to get one for Thomas.

Thanks

Jenny

I have asked about this in the past for both myself and my daughters.

My consultant said that most asthmatics should not have one of these at home and if you/your child is unwell enough to be worrying about sats levels then you should be seeking medical advice/treatment through GP or A&E.

Also many asthmatics can hold their sats for a while during an attack then suddenly plummet to the 80's or even 70's and if you were still at home when that happened-well its not worth thinking about....

Your little boy may have a different pattern to his asthma/been told to get one so,sorry I haven't been of any help to you, just passing on advice I have been given x

I haven't actually discussed it with his consultant so he may well tell me the same. I might see what he says at the next appointment.

We thought about it a while back and decided against it at that time. However, I had to call an ambulance during Thomas's last attack and was horrified that the paramedics could not check his oxygen levels as neither their finger pulse oximeter or the one in the ambulance worked. When checked at hospital his oxygen levels were mid 80s, yet because they couldn't check this he wasn't put on oxygen until we were almost at the hospital.

I just want one for my own peace of mind, he can still be happily running round with oxygen levels in the high 80s. He is what they keep calling a happy wheezer and seems to take the doctors by surprise with how ill he actually is.

Hi Jenny

I purchased one for my son and I use it for my reassurance after he has been released from a hospital stay and I want to keep an eye on his sats, I think as long as they are used wisely they are a useful piece of equipment to have and I wouldn't want to be without it.
