Asthmatic cough and palpitations.

Recently I've been diagnosed severely asthmatic by my cons. I'm on a variety of meds and such. I've noticed recently when my ""asthmatic"" cough kicks in, I get really bad palpitations follow once its settled down. I have a follow up with cons next week so I'll ask him about it. Has anyone else had any experience with this, or with anything like this?

Hi and welcome!

Definitely worth asking cons about - though have a think about exactly when you get them - is it when your cough has started but before you take meds for it? Because they might think it's just the reliever etc (and it might be) if you don't specify when they happen - I know lots of Ventolin can make my heart feel like it's doing an Olympic gymnastics routine sometimes!

I do get palpitations sometimes anyway - much less than I used to though, now it's better controlled so that makes me think it is something to do with the breathing. I was referred to a cardiologist as they thought for a bit it might be a heart problem not an asthma problem (resp cons noticed my resting heart rate was really high). I still get the high HR at times and sometimes am not sure why, but as all the heart tests were normal it doesn't bother me (only bothers unsuspecting nurses/drs who don't know about it hehe). When I went back for cardiology follow-up and told the cardiologist that I definitely did have asthma he said that would probably cause the symptoms I'd been having ie palpitations, ectopic beats, tachycardia etc, without anything being wrong.

Your cons might want to do some heart tests though if you've not had any, like echo and ECG - just to rule that out. Mine were so keen on it that I've had 3 echos - I changed where I went twice and every time they wanted to do an echo lol even though they were normal - hopefully will just be one though for you.

The palpitations usually come if I manage to stop coughing before taking inhalers (my coughing more often than not starts up again 30 seconds later), they are worse afterwards though. I've had plenty of ECG's done and they've all shown sinus tachycardia or supraventricular tachycardia. I've had my heart rate 260+ with no obvious reason for it. I have a few issues with my BP and heart rate (high heart rate low BP). I've been asked if I've ever seen anyone from cardiology but haven't. I'll bring it up when I see him next. Thank you.
