Random question, today I was at a traffic light controlled rounderbout with box junction on the lane on my right a big lorry and i was at the frount on a red light and behind me came a polic car under blues, I moved as much as i coul without crossing the line but the police car was changing his sirens and playing with his horn pulling faces/hands going up behind me. Eventually the lights changed so moved foward enough for it to get past.

My question what it the offical thing to do in this situation? Go through the red to let it past? Or sit there?

I think the official thing to do is to move over as much as possible while obeying all traffic signs (essentially just sit there and wait if the traffic light is red), but in practice most people probably would move forward for an emergency vehicle although you'd have to make sure all other traffic has stopped moving to do this safely.

See rule 219 of the Highway Code:

direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndT...

""219

Emergency and Incident Support vehicles. You should look and listen for ambulances, fire engines, police, doctors or other emergency vehicles using flashing blue, red or green lights and sirens or flashing headlights, or Highways Agency Traffic Officer and Incident Support vehicles using flashing amber lights. When one approaches do not panic. Consider the route of such a vehicle and take appropriate action to let it pass, while complying with all traffic signs. If necessary, pull to the side of the road and stop, but try to avoid stopping before the brow of a hill, a bend or narrow section of road. Do not endanger yourself, other road users or pedestrians and avoid mounting the kerb. Do not brake harshly on approach to a junction or roundabout, as a following vehicle may not have the same view as you.

Ive been in similar situation several times over the years.

If im at a red light with no chance of moving over to let any emergency vehicles through, i check and go through if safe to do so.

I havent got into trouble over it and have done the same thing to let coppers get through.

Quite often, emergency vehicles manage to get past at box junctions if you pull

fwd to let them pass, or they will

go on other side of road.

If emergency vehicle is coming and you pull over to the side to let them pass, keep your indicator on

this confirms you are aware of them.

if the traffoc lights dont have have a camera on then move forward...if the lights do have a camera ont he other hand you have evey right to stay there as if you get flashed, and take it to court to appeal, then you could get find and have points for crossing a red light...

officially all emergency services have to follow the highway code also, so they should stopped at red lights to!!
