Hello maxer
If the oxygen saturation in the blood falls below 88% (commonly known as 'sats') this can cause damage to the other vital organs. Supplementary oxygen is generally recommended in order to avoid this damage.
A respiratory nurse will normally get you to do a 6 minute walk without oxygen and again with oxygen, from this they can work out how much oxygen you need when exerciseing. Look after yourself maxer.
It should be suggested by nurses if they dont then ask for tests good luck
The doctors thinking it will benefit the patient is the shortest answer without going into details that may not apply in all cases where it is prescribed.
no i was told it wont help me at tall and i can only manage about 5 yards at most and cant do any form of exercise on a good day i can do my salf a cup of coffee on a bad day i need every thing doing for me
If you have an oximeter take your sats when walking. If they are below 88 then oxygen will probably be prescribed. Getting out of breath though is not always because of low oxygen sats. In my case my sats were down to an average of 82, sometimes 79 when exercising. I should have been on oxygen a long time before I was, and in the end it was only because I asked for the oxygen assessment that I got one. To find I needed 4 litres a minute. At the stage when I asked for the review I was feeling very ill indeed. Don't wait. If you think you need help, ask for it sooner rather than later. Breathe easy
