Just recently diagnosed with emphysema so forgive the ignorance but should I be trying to expel mucous daily, something I find difficult?

Hello caspercat, the basic answer to your question ,and I feel sure you will get this from all the other members is Keep it clear and you have more chance of keeping it clean. We all live in dread of chest infections so it is megga ( Sound like Jamie Oliver now) important that you get the muck off your lungs as often as possible, drink plenty of water , ask about mucus medication, see your respiratory nurse and ask about breathing techniques. There are also devices out there . to help clear your airways. Its not a nice thing to have to do, it can itself leave you quite breathless, but you must get it up and out. keep in touch here. their a great crowd.

Thanks alot for your response - very helpful, will take your comments on board when I next see my GP in a couple of weeks. Thanks again.

It's not a very nice thing to have to do but you also need to check the colour of it. Light - good, dark not good. Ask about a colour chart from your nurse. :)

Thanks gillyj appreciate your reply.

Hi, My husband uses a flutter device but as it was said by canalchris - it can leave you breathless. The other thing he uses is a saline solution in his nebuliser when bad - that seems to help. And as gillyj says it depends on the colour whether you should be getting further advise from the Doctor.

This COPD illness is very much a personal learning curve - what will work for you may not work for others etc. Keep asking lots of questions - knowledge will help and take away some fear. Good Luck and stay well TAD xx

Many thanks TAD for your kind response. You're right it's a learning curve but this website has been incredibly useful and crucially, as calmed down my initial panic. My best to you and your husband.
