Invest in research and help us solve the puzzle of lung disease.

A few weeks ago we asked our web community if they could support our research work. Not many people took up the offer. So we are asking again, because it’s important. The huge public profile of cancer and heart disease means that lung disease often gets pushed to the back or completely forgotten about. This needs to change. So we are asking for your help.

Even if you aren’t in a position to support financially, we need you to help us spread the word about how research holds the key to defeating lung disease. This means telling friends and family, everyone you know in fact.

So what? Every day we hear from wonderful people, who are living with a debilitating lung disease, just how difficult things are getting for them. Diseases like IPF (Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis) don’t have nearly enough media exposure that they should have, and this means that a public have never heard of them, let alone know how unjust, devastating and fatal they can be.

‘Idiopathic’ means that we are unsure of what causes this lung disease. Research will help us provide the answers so that we can at least remove this word. We need to understand what happens in IPF and how we can treat and, one day, prevent it and cure it.

And we’ve already made steps towards a day when this could happen. You can read about Dr Hirani’s research here.

What happens to your donation? I know that many generous people worry about what happens to their money and where we spend it. Becoming a Research Investor means 100% of your donation will go towards funding world-class research where the need is greatest. Diseases like IPF, COPD, asthma and lung cancer affect one in five people in the UK, which means we’ve got a lot of work to do. Please, be part of the great work that could save the lives of millions.

Seasonal greetings Dominic,

I am the chairman of my local breathe easy group, I have COPD as do most of my group,

I believe the average % of breathe easy membership with COPD is around 70%

and generally in the U.K. the figure is staggering.

"The huge public profile of cancer and heart disease means that lung disease often gets pushed to the back or completely forgotten about. This needs to change. So we are asking for your help."

mesothelioma is a lung disease that is classified as a cancer and as such is receiving more attention as to healthcare and research than COPD or Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis together, also will be included in CSN 2013 fundings, unlike COPD and IPF

AND yet the BLF has decided that most of the donations in 2011 were allocated to mesothelioma funding and research, rather than the less well funded/researched COPD and IPF and other well deserving projects that you have highlighted

"100% of your donation will go towards funding world-class research"

Incredible, do the BLF staff Know about this ?

Hi

This issue has been discussed on another blog - blf.healthunlocked.com/blog...

Have a read of the that blog and I hope that clarifies some of the issues you have raised.

Thanks

Mark

I have supported through becoming a paid up member and making a small monthly donation. I am lucky as I can do that, but many people are not in that position especially if they are relying on benefit.

Hi Lynne,

Firstly thank you so much for your support your donation is already helping us support the 1 in 5 people in the UK affected by lung disease. Please feel free to shout about your support for the BLF and the work we do as raising awareness fo the BLF and lung conditions in general will help us gather even more supporters like yourself.

Thank you again for your support

Best

Dominic
