HOW MUCH??
When I smoked in the early 70's they were 5s 6d for 20 Rothmans King Size.
Ive never smoked but when I was at school, children paid 20p to buy one fag from the shop by the school.Im 47 now.xxx
When I was about 13, early 70s, I was at a 'special' school (previously known as 'approved') where the kids also lived. The head of the school used to sell 'Number Six' at 1p each or 9p for a pack of 10 from his study every lunchtime.
He claimed he had to do that or risk the kids nipping off to go to local shops for them, we were not really allowed out of the grounds like that, but some did. There was a pub down the road that used to be quite 'friendly', knowing where the lads were from and being sympathetic in turning a blind eye to buying cigs, and bottles of beer.
Otherwise we had to wait for Saturday when we got our 'spending money' and were taken in the school mini-bus to the town, where we had to line up outside with the staff and go in one at a time to buy our stuff for the week. I think we got about 30p a week, not sure now.
My Mum always said she would give up the cigs when they were 50p a packet, and she did. She'd been stopped for many years before she got lung cancer....
oh my gawd that is silly money so pleased I do not smoke now,
I'm speechless nine pound to help kill yourself I too am glad I don't smoke, but still appreciate how hard it is for people to give up to spite the cost as they are addicted.
