Hi,

They are really.lovely. They usually go over your meds with you and ask about your breathing, etc. They may also do a range of blood and breathing tests.

I remember my first one as being the first time I could ask and receive as much information as I wanted. Don't worry. The respiratory nurses in general are great, very knowledgeable and supportive. Auntymary xx

I've had a few appointments with mine and she' been really good in explaining many things. Their aim is to get you breathing better and tell you how to look after your lungs a bit better.

I've been 'taught' how to change my breathing pattern from the quite fast top of my chest I was doing at first to a slower under-the-ribs and through the nose rhythm that is probably giving me a better oxygen flow as well as getting rid of more Carbon Dioxide.

She has often studied my chest, watched me breathing and how talking affects it too. I've been a DJ for many years and still do my radio shows. I had a tendency to rabbit on quite quickly, to get the words out before I would breathe. For the radio that was to try and 'hide' the rasp of my throat as I took a breath.

At present I record the voice work then mix it in with the music and jingles to produce the final show, which allowed me to edit out the noisy breathing sounds. I did notice this last week that the sound was not as obvious as it used to be, so the change in pattern has helped.

She has asked questions about my walking, how that affects my breathing, when I need to reach for my inhaler and so on.

My advice is not to be anxious, just go and have a chat. They are trained to relax you.
