Afraid I could not stay awake have seen some highlights which look great, so will have feet up and watch it on iplayer on my laptop this afternoon.
Hi Stitch - that was only part of it and that competitor parade happens at all opening ceremonies. It actually started at 9.00 p.m. (think some of the stuff on all day was tv filling in and maybe giving background stuff - don't know, didn't watch) and I thought the beginning bit was brilliant and so different - not too keen on some of the music later on - and had to go to bed at the end of the athletes coming in. Just caught up with the lighting the flame on iplayer - certainly did take my breath away. Well done Danny Boyle - brilliant show. Will revisit when I get back tonight as missed the Queen's speech as well.
Let's hope our athletes can now bring home the medals. Will not necessarily be watching, but will check the highlights as and when we are involved.
Hello Pedantic,
What with your use of capital letters or All Caps as it is called, I thought you were angry (did you know that online use of All Caps is seen as an expression of anger?
I am guessing you are not angry and that you mean this light-heartedly, because not liking sport is one thing, but to imagine the rest of the world would have to never do anything because there are sick people would not be realistic.
I have a lot of reasons I'm not keen on the whole thing, I mean look at Greece, with its huge debts, it has lots of buildings that cost them an absolute fortune to build at the time that are now entirely derelict, and ion reflection or in retrospect then maybe having the Olympics there, was a price to high for the originators of the Olympics.
Ordinary people being terrorised in their own homes, as a result of having rockets placed above their bedrooms, is a price I find too high to start with, and it shows to me that people still have a lack of freedom and rights.
Therefore, my opinion is a no to the Olympics if it cannot be done without the force used in London, where inhabitants have no rights about their immediate vicinity.
Should anything go wrong, in the case of having to fire off these rockets, who knows if it will or will not take down an entire building?
t john. i do apologise.i am certainly not an angry person.i did not know/was ignorant that using capitals meant such a thing.i just thought using capitals was better for some who like me might be a little bereft of the old lamp oil.once again sorry to all.
Hi Pedantic,
Don't worry, I never knew that before either, and same as you, I thought it was much clearer, anyway, I said it as I got the idea you did not know it, as it was obvious that you were not angry.
Oh that's a shame stitch you missed most of the entertainment, the official opening ceremony was from 9pm and dear Queenie, Bond, Arctic Monkeys, NHS, St Ormond Hospital patients and Staff, dance and song by many, Paul MacCartney, Mike Oldfrield, the spectalur olympic flame engineering and fireworks of course. I thought it was all fab.
I enjoyed all, I was hard pushed to stay awake for 3 hours plus, but slept in late this morning to make up for lost zed time I enjoyed the entertainment tremendously and it was great seeing Mike Oldfield play Tubular Bells again. sooooooooper
Hi Stitch its the first olympic games where women and men athletes are competing from every country entering the olmpic games yee haa
I always remember the reason the olympic games began, the reason behind it, to bring peace and friendships among Nations of the world. I like that, its a good thing I think and its always mentioned at the Olympic games ceremonies.
Yes, I see that is a good idea, or was, originally, but that placing rockets on people's homes is where I find something is wrong, as the idea of peace is not being had by those people, residents, trying to go back and forth to their homes with soldiers looming about that probably frighten the life out of them.
I think the MOD are going to take that precaution in any given similar situation where there is a danger of terrorist attack John. London or the country can't afford to risk not taking adequate precautions as many more people lives could be at risk if these precautions are not taken. Its unfortunate that such precautions are needed in the world in which we live.
Right, but surely they could have erected some special, neutral territorial towers, instead of on top of someone's kitchen.
I can just picture it, stood there in yer birthday suit, not you, me in mine, stirring the morning coffee when some boot-polished face in camouflage suit, dangles down in front of my window, on a rope, demanding that I turn me radio down.
Or, I can imagine some little old lady, popping up all the time to ask the boys if they want a cup of tea, I don't like em, she exclaims, and what are they by the way, they don't half look nasty.
They're all right nan, don't worry!
Well, you just be careful.
No worries nan, if we have to use em you'll be the first to know, if ya bone china starts to rattle it's us.
Oew, I don't like it
Don't you worry nan, we know what we''re doing, we're here to help you
You sure
Certain
Okay, only will you stop testing that blooming siren out, it reminds me of 1941.
Sure nan, we're all done, the last of the heat seekers is up and the machine guns are all loaded!
Nite then, and have a good time.
Lol that brought to mind gyles cartoons
We had a very interesting speaker at our local breathe easy meeting earlier this year, we have a mixture of speakers both Lung Health related and speakers just for interest or entertainment.
The topic on one occasion was "The History of the Olympic Games", the speaker was an ex BBC sports presenter and often he would thro in a bit of the behind the scenes at the BBC, it was both amusing and interesting,
For those interested - here is some history from the Olympic Museum, (its a pdf document):
olympic.org/Documents/Olymp...
"A universal language full of positive values, sport
and Olympism may be regarded as “vehicles of
hope”. Indeed, the Olympic values of “Striving
for excellence”, “Demonstrating respect” and
“Celebrating friendship” are aimed at encouraging
people to get on better and thus promoting peace."
I'm about the same, not into patriotism, nationalism.
I'm usually nodding off about 9 pm, but I found it so amazing that I stayed awake, makes one proud to be British that all those millions and millions all over the world were watching little old England at it's best - putting on a show.
Libby
Well I was worried it was going to be naff. But I thought it was celebratory, eccentric and a bit bonkers! Loved it. The opening ceremony of Olympics is always about the host country hence the patriotism.
I wasn't going to watch the ceremony, but did and thought it was really good entertainment, i aren't into sport, but up to the climax I enjoyed the ceremony, but the climax, paul ,cartney, was rubbish, time he retired to his mull, he spoiled it for me anyway.
I agree, Paul is past his sell by date, but mike Oldfield on the other hand wink wink
I likes our Paul but when over and over again, but the old hymn-like songs, which I really like, get to be unbearable when done so often, is Let it Be really necessary, it's not the end of the Second World War, troops been back ages.
My son was in it. So of course stayed up to watch it.
I thought was very good but didnt really understand the
house scene with the family and teenagers lol.
that's interesting gocat, what part did your son play? Bet you were feeling very proud
Yes thanks Zoee, did feel proud and he had the time of his life.
He just did dancing when tiger feet etc came on
He was behind the WWW man when they raised that house up.
and also went on through the house onto glastonbury hill.
So many of them though, so hard to make him out.
that's great It would have been a great party night for all I think. I'll bet your son will be attending olympic games opening nights for the rest of his life Congratulations to him and to you.
The guy that gave the talk to our breathe easy said he has never missed attending the olympic games since his teens, he is well into his 70s now (he also has copd)..
Have to admit I have no interest in it lol
I thought the opening ceremony was pretty amazing and was proud we'd pulled off such a spectacle (not the usual power and glory stuff) , though I did have some trouble staying awake! Watched quite a lot of sport yesterday, too - with children, glued to telly. I particularly like the rowing, which reminded me of many years ago when I rowed for my college. I was quite fit once! (Sigh...)
Next week we (family) are off to London for some volleyball and hockey and I hope it will be an experience to remember for my children. We used to live not far from the Olympic Park until we escaped south west for some cleaner air. I am concerned about getting nebulising/physio done early enough and getting out of the house in time for travelling, queueing etc. Have to be up at 4 am I should think!
I agree EmmyH. It was very well done. Good on Danny Boyle for putting on an amazing show. !!
For anyone interested there is a good writeup in the Telegraph.
I've judt changed my mind, having happened upon the women's gymnastics
I say old bean, all the other shows were empty-seated, this one's full, lots of old blokes in dodgy raincoats no doubt,
reminds me
don't stop I know just what you're saying
and I can't find a reason
don't tell me cos it hurts
must do
low bar top bar
low bar double twisting
they must have practiced on their bunk beds
I do have a new sort of complaint, namely,
I keep reaching for my remote to backtrack watching telly, like with the computer and YouTube, with mouse
I even have the same with trying to read a book, go to click on a name and find the right page
This Danny is Susan Boyle's brother?
Anyway, have watched 4 minutes of it all, in total, unfunny thing is, the TV has been ruined too.
Saw that instead of masses of people bringing until income to Britain there are 200,000 less customers in the high street, Oxford Street in fact.
Now as I hear about people being interrogated for a couple of quid, all of which will go on something necessary, for survival, it seems an exorbitant waste to spend billions on something like a couple of blokes chucking spears, racing around a track, jumping over a pole.
If the people are cared for and don't have to start becoming crooks, then if there's money over okay. But I still cannot get Greece out of my mind, wit it's extraordinarily expensive new buildings that now lie derelict.
