Hi, I do take omeprazole but the lowest dose of 10mg, I started it about a year ago after having managed acid reflux myself for 40 years by cutting out all acid foods ie citrus & vinegar plus fats - except avocados & yogurt - and alcohol. Personally, just a thin smear of butter sets off the reflux if I don't take an omeprazole. I've learnt the hard way not to ever take Ibuprofen for muscle pain & stick to paracetamol with food. All my meds and supplements I take with food, never on an empty stomach.

I like healthy, fresh, tasty food so use lots of garlic, herbs & low salt miso paste plus either lemon juice or live Apple Cider Vinegar in salad dressing (weirdly lemons & live ACV are okay, I think they turn alkaline in the gut).

What I'm saying is you need to eliminate the irritants but it doesn't necessarily mean bland. You'll have to find what works for you.

I forgot to mention that in eating fresh veg I make sure I include plenty of pro and pre-biotic foods to improve the good bacteria in my gut. Because I take an antibiotic 3 days a week November to April I also add a capsule of 50billion prebiotic on 4 the days I don't .

I also forgot to mention that on settling to sleep I lay down on left side, because of the shape of the stomach the acid is far less likely to spill over into the esophagus. Some folks don't eat after 8pm to ensure digestion is done. I take 3 meds before bed so sit up reading on pillows for half an hour.

I use Gaviscon Advance which is only available on prescription, I only use PPI’s which are not meant for long term use if I absolutely have to, you GP should know this.

I take 15ml of aloe vera juice from Holland and Barratt every day. It helps my stomach cope with over-spicy over-fatty ready meals (though I still avoid these now) so it might help you.

Probiotics are advertised widely for this and I did read a few years ago about bone broth being one of the best things for your gut along with making sure you chew your food properly to stop a leaky gut. It's great if you have a local butcher that you can get a good mixture of bones from. I put them in the slow cooker overnight and make sure to get the marrow out. You can either add this to food or make it into a drink. There is loads of information on the internet , good luck x

Granny knew best.....My grandmother used to boil bones regularly and called it "stock" not bone broth. She always used this for her delicious home made soups and gravy. So many of the old sayings are being reinvented as though they were just discovered.

"Early to bed,

Early to rise,

Makes you

Healthy, wealthy and wise" is another lol

My Mum and brother went to the butchers years and years ago and Mum shyly asked for a bone for the dog which the butcher used to hand out free.

β€œO great Mum we’re getting a doggy”

She slapped him on the back of the neck the whole way home.

The bone was for the soup!

That is probably why people were so much healthier years ago. I still do this now and granny certainly knew best. They have linked bone broth to having a healthy gut and think the difference between stock and bone broth is the marrow and collagen in bone broth that isn't present in today's stock. Everybody in grannies day cooked from scratch with good food which wasn't messed with x

Here last night we decided on a soup as we were fed up with sandwiches and filled it full of root veg and swede and turnips as it was a tinned chicken and veg chunky soup from Tesco which we all enjoyed and felt nice and full!

I also have heartburn and wake up with a sore throat from the acid. My doctor prescribed Omeprazole but within two weeks, my mood had tanked. I told him about it and he said that he'd never heard of that before but a couple of days later, he phoned me back and said that he'd spoken with the surgery's pharmacist and apparently, causing depression is a rare side effect. I think that it might be to do with upsetting the my gut health?

Anyway, all that I do now is sleep on two pillows to raise my head and I also take a probiotic every day. I still have a slight sensation when I wake up but I can live with that. I also find that if I drink any alcohol, late in the evening, that can trigger it too so just water for me after 8pm.

Good luck with finding a solution that works for you.

Thank you - I don't drink & definitely find sleeping with raised pillows helps with my breathing too πŸ‘

Hi there I've been taking Omeprazole 30mg one in morning and one at night for 4years now as it is the only medication that does work for me , alongside all my other medications. (By the way I am 78). Doctors tried others and over the counter but nothing was suitable. Go back and ask again what else you can take. I take inhalers for asthma.

have you tried a probiotic and a digestive enzyme? I take both and it has made a real difference to my tummy. I didn’t get heartburn etc but as I have very mild diverticulosis I did have bouts of diarrhoea and constipation. The digestive enzyme I take is supposed to be very good for people that has acid reflux etc I don’t want PPI’s as they aren’t good long term.

Hi, Lots of talk about Omeprazole on here. I have been taking Pantoprazole for the last 7-8 years, can`t actually remember. No reflux and unless being cheerful is a side effect none whatsoever. There are quite a number of different drugs in the "prazole" range. Have a chat to your GP. Enjoy your Sunday,

Chris.

I have COPD & take Omeprazole. I recently started taking probiotics in capsule form which has improved my gut health quite considerably. I felt that I needed them due to the amount of antibiotics I take. My need for Omeprazole is definitely reducing & I don’t have acid reflux like I used to. I did quite a lot of research before I purchased the probiotics - they are expensive though at about Β£30 for a month’s supply.

I have been diagnosed with gastritis myself a couple months back, and as I was already on 15mg of lansoprazole once a day for my IBD, the doc upped it to 30mg twice a day.

Healthy suggestions for me were basically just watch what you eat, avoid citrus fruits, and tomatoes. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

I don't have gastritis but I do take prebiotic inulin and probiotics to help my guts cope with the frequent antibiotics etc. I buy it on-line at Golden Greens, the link is greensorganic.co.uk/product..... Hope you find something that works for you. x

PteW43 profile image
PteW43β€’ in reply toPaperQueen

Oh will check this link out to PaperQ thank you for the link.. It's exactly why I want to make sure my gut health is in gd condition re inhalers & prednisone we need to take for copd.

NB Folks....

It was Gastritis that caused me pain in my chest in March 2023 but at the time my Dr thought it was Angina!

He prescribed Bisoprolol lowest dose for me & for over 6 months I could hardly get out of bed. I posted on here, somewhere!

Eventually, after my repeated requests to see a Cardiologist I got an appt linkup online last Nov 2023. She stopped me the same aft on that Beta blocker, ordered a 24 hr heart monitor to be fitted (to make sure it wasn't a heart problem)... it came bk normal!

Also a CT scan that showed a small nodule on my left lung size 3.2mm that didn't need any treatment, no cancer present & a Endoscopy that diagnosed Gastritis.

Your heart & oesophagus r nx door to each other.

Hence my interest to keep my gut health in tiptop condition.

Question, Question everything..

But can I just add, NEVER ignore pain in chest, arm /neck .
