Those who take azythromycin prophylactic, what do you do when you get a chest infection (my rescue pack has doxycycline in it?)?

Hi, Pete usually takes Ciprofloxacin but when he last had a chest infection after covid he was prescribed Doxycycline. Xx

Hi Pete. I have been on "doxycycline and Pred's" in my rescue pack for a while - I don't like doxycycline but they seem to work.

I take Azithromycin 3 times a week. When I have a chest infection I stop the Azithromycin and take my rescue pack which is Amoxicillin and Prednisolone. xxSheila 💕⚘

Sometimes my pharmacist (chemist?) tells me to stop azithromycin because of the QT interval interaction with some other antibiotics, so I would ask someone about taking the azithromycin. I am in the US, so I am not sure who you would speak with but here it's my pharmacist.

I also am not too sure what the QT interval is, I know it's measured on a EKG, but that's all I know.

So good luck, I hope you feel better soon!

I have just had a chest infection and have Doxycycline as my rescue pack. Before starting them I have to stop taking the Azithromycin. Hope this helps

Can I suggest that you speak with your prescriber about taking antibiotics on top of Azithromycin?

I see that some folk who have responded to your question stop the Azithromycin to take Doxycycline.

If I need additional AB’s on top of the regular Azithromycin which I take then I asked what I should do was told that I should continue the Azithromycin which I do.

So clearly there are two ways of managing this.

Wishing you well.

My wife takes Azithro 3x per week, but does not have a rescue pack as such. If she starts producing yukky green sputum semds an e-mail to doctor and asks for Amoxicillin. Prescription is usually sent back by return for me to collect. She continues with the Azithro as well as amoxicillin.

Hello! I too take Azith 3x a week and have been rigorously told by all (doctors. consultants and respiratory nurses) to stop using it when it is necessary to take the Doxy in my rescue pack. But, yes, safest to check with your GP as we are all different.

Hope you feel better soon xx

Hi Chip. I take Co-amoxiclav and pred as my rescue pack. I have been told to continue with Azith 3x7 as normal. I think you must ask for a telephone appointment with your GP to discuss. Good luck :)

I have always been advised to stop the Azithromycin while taking Doxycycline and start again when I have completed the course. Hope you’re feeling better soon.

I'm on azithromycin and have been on antibiotics for a possible chest infection (Gp wasn't sure!) I didn't even think about stopping the azithromycin but I've been fine.

I take Azith and my rescue pack contains Doxy and Prednisolone, but I haven't had to use it yet. I'm glad you asked this question- I never thought to ask if I should stop Azith.

When my consultant started me on Azithromycin three times a week he said I should stop taking it if I had a flare up and start my rescue meds, re-starting the azithromycin after the two week course.

I have amoxicillin and doxycycline in my rescue pack, so alternate them ie for a flare up take amoxicillin, then for the next flare up take doxycycline. I also have prednisolone.

Xx Moy
