Iatrogenic Pain from Pul Rehab

Hi friends. I have been struggling for weeks with back and rib severe pain as a result of my over-zealous instructions and actions during and following my Pulmonary rehab sessions. I was housebound for 5 weeks and I am lucky to have friends do shopping for me.

I began to miss the occassional session due a grumbling pain in my Lumbar. I was told to excecise every day and did so. I attempted to increase my chair sits and pushups which I always found difficult. I was getting fit and felt so encouraged by my stamina improving over 10 sessions. I reached my final session feeling really pleased but missed 4 sessions due to a grumbling back( they added 4 towards the end)..

The following week, I went walking with a cold March wind at my back . Took off my walking boots and had the most terrible jolt of pain covering Thorax area and intercostal muscles.. GP prescibed 30/500 Codiene and had a back Xray which showed no fracture. It was agony coughing and to top it all, I had severe constipation.

I will be honest in saying I took the maximum dose of codiene for weeks and became anxious that I may be depending too much on them. My doctor friends told me not to worry, just accept the relief. Well I have been able to cut them down and now able to walk very slowly but still much pain. My physio therapy starts in 2 weeks and I am not sure what to expect. I have osteoporosis and having Dexa scan in May.

We probably could all benefit from Pul rehab but please listen to your body. If it hurts give it a rest and don't end up like me. I guess I am feeling angry at myself for working so hard and not listening. I wonder if the staff should have picked up on my absences too.

Well spring is nigh and I will slowly do some slow pigeon-toed walking till I heal. At least I am walking. Don't know the prognosis but seems like I could fully recover (I hope so!!!)

Thanks for listening all xxx JJ_7

One of my pilates instructors is incredibly well trained and always points out which excercises those with osteoporosis should avoid . I wonder if you, inadvertently, have damaged where the osteoporosis is? I'm not medically trained of course but this particular instructor is amazing with her knowledge, especially of the over 55s and people like us, and gives lots of options for various degrees of decreptitude.

It's so easy to overdo things. I hope your progress towards recovery will carry on, howbeit slowly. The physio should help a lot, when you eventually get it. Best wishes.

Hi it can be a good and not so good thing doing exercise and at pulmonary rehab they do put you through some paces,I did the course when I was at my most feeble and it helped double my strength ,I also have continued since with breathe easy exercise group and all exercise should be done at your own pace quoting my instructor and a dull ache is a good ache BUT I am also sometimes pushing myself only to be in pain .double edged sword me thinks. Take it easy and you will feel better soon
