Hi

Today a second attempt a doctor finally managed to take some blood from my arterial vein ( Gas test) to text my oxygen intake & I was told it was a bit low & she mentioned something about Hypoxia so she turned up my oxygen tube from 1 litre to 3 litres

I filled in a form for Home Oxygen & gave it back to the nurse so got to wait to see what happens after ive got an appointment for long term oxygen on 14 th of Septemberin a different hospital so see what happens

I had one of those blood gas tests in a and e back in 2017 when I got diagnosed with blood clots in my lungs and it hurt when they took blood out of the artery in my arm rather than a vein when the young doctor sat me down and explained what he was doing and reassured me.

At first shr failed because she missed the vein & admitted she failed. I emailed my specialist who suggedtrd i had oxygen in the first place this wss going on

Thwn sbout 20-30mins later shr wss back & this time managed it to my relief so got bruises & plasters all over those areas

As much as i appreciate lots theyre doing this for my benefit to hopefully stop these constant visits i hate being their prize pincushion

They told me it ciuld take days ir sometimes weeks according to priority so whether i get to take some hpme ehen im releasrd or not

Appatrntly a member of the fire service has to come & do an sssessment if thr house

Hopefully with home oxygen you will be able to maintain stable levels and have an end to hospital admissions. Good luck and best wishes xx

Sorry, I don't know that either. As you say, it may remain a mystery.

The blood is taken from an artery not a vein. I’ve had it done four times, three times were very painful and once I barely felt it! Our local firemen came to have a chat once I was home from hospital and on oxygen 24/7 to check for fire risks and give advice.

I know - thats what this doctor tried to do & failed 4 times Even thiugh he tried further up the artery ( because I was in agony with the bruise at the bottom of my right arm he still got the wrong blood

Im just grateful things are finalky moving forward at last so I hope things improve

My husband is oxygen sensitive ie he needs supplementary oxygen to survive but is unable to breathe out enough carbon dioxide to keep him safe. Its imperative that the balance of the two gases are kept at acceptable levels and therefore he has tests every six months or whenever he seems to have symptoms of increased Co2 . The oxygen level prescribed is then adjusted accordingly It may not be pleasant but it is very necessary to know where these levels are I have to say my husband has never had a painful experience but that may well vary with the location of the arteries in different people or the competence of the person doing the procedure 🤷🏻‍♀️

I hear what youre saying but as you kindly pointed out that the gasses have to be kept at accetable levels I understand that & whist your husband has never had a painful experience - everyone is different & despute putting plenty of emla cream & an extra local anesthetic I still felt pain & unfortunately in my mind this is the way I feel about the doctors ability

you may well be right , there are good and bad in all professions , my own mother refused to let one hospital doctor perform a routine procedure on her , she said that the procedure was quite painful anyway but when he did it the pain was excruciating 😣

oh dear. Yes it was painful for me too

I understood that the arterial tests were to ensure that you were not a carbon dioxide retainer as giving more oxygen in that case could cause harm.

how low is your oxygen on oximeter?

Sara_2611 profile image
Sara_2611 in reply toMaricopa

it tends to differ when the episodes happen On occasoons its been in the 40s on occasions in the 60s

Wow. I guess if it doesn’t stay that low for very long one makes it. But that’s pretty darn low. I read a story about a man who got to low levels like that. 40’s etc. He’d then put his oxygen on. He ended up in a wheelchair and lived 9 yrs with end stage emphysema!
