Hi Samjef.I used to tell people I was allergic to wine because it blocked my nose and gave me a thumping headache. Of course, I was laughed at and often told “that is called a hangover.”

However, you can have a reaction to wine.

I would say if you notice a connection between drinking wine and increased breathlessness, the there is one.

The old vino collapso like all alcohol is an imflamitory, admittidley symptomy do tend to be more manageable with the odd glass now and again but for me anyway i limite it but we are all different and you must do what is best for you ( hic sorry ,lol)

I find the sulphites in wine irritate my throat and trachea and make me cough and breathless. (Much as any foodstuffs with sulphites in - tomato ketchup, pickles - and vinegar! 😂). And then the next day I seem to be much drier, breathless and have irritated airways. 🙄 is there no end to these miseries?

It seems to be unanimous was hoping it was a one off Thankyou Sam

You can buy wine that has no added sulphites. You could try a glass and see if it affects your breathing.

I too can't drink wine any more - I have silent acid reflux, where the sphincter at the top of the stomach doesn't fully close, and the vapour from the stomach acid wafts up the oesophagus to my throat and down into the lungs. It's supposedly as corrosive as battery acid. I take a PPI inhibitor, lanzaprazole, which stops the production of stomach acid, but wine, especially white wine, is acidic, and activates the pepsin cells that have lodged in the osophagus, and turns them into pepsinogen which is what digests food in the stomach. The stomach has a lining that protects it from being digested, but your oesophagus and throat don't - hence why they feel sore and get inflamed. So I've had to cut out all alcohol, tomatoes, oranges - anything acidic.

How sad. Lung disease is a pain.

Hi Twinklenose, I take a Gardium tablet every day with breakfast and that stops acid reflux. Have you tried that?

Hi, I take something similar, Lanzaprazole, prescribed by my GP. I take it twice a day, and it definitely helps during the day time. But I get a huge amount of mucus in my throat and sinuses in the morning, spend 30 minutes coughing and spluttering to clear it. I can't drink alcohol or eat tomatoes, my throat feels like it's burning, so I avoid these.

Thanks for your input!

I find that white wine does affect my breathing the next day. I have tried red wine so many times but I don't find it as enjoyable and I usually end up with a headache. x

I think it can cause your lungs to dehydrate.
