Hi and welcome Momo. I have emphysema too and have an increasingly croaky voice but it isn't related to breathing. What medication are you on? I suspect that, in spite of rinsing after my steroid inhaler, it's long term use of that that is causing my croaking.

Hi it's actually my son who has been diagnosed by x-ray only, he's 41 and GP said he's had it a few years for it to show on x-ray. He's getting breathing tests for staging at end of month. He's not on meds till then,GP has given him ventalin inhaler but it doesn't really help. I've been trying to get him to do deep breaths but he really struggles and after doing it a few times his voice goes really croaky for a few minutes and I just wondered if this was normal.

I'm sorry that your son has just been given this diagnosis. Hopefully the breathing test will shed more light on this for you. Sometimes ventolin helps but after the next tests more treatment options may be suggested. Given his age, I'd suggest that he asks for a blood test to check for antitrypsin 1 deficiency if this hasn't been done. Sometimes lung disease is hereditary. In the meantime, his croaky voice may be as a result of a dry throat and it may help if he keeps sipping water to ease it but also worth a mention to his doctor when he gets an opportunity.

Keep in touch and ley us know how you go on. Best wishes.

Hello Mo and welcome to the site, it's a wonderful place full of fun advice and very supportive people, by the way we don't in any way give out medical advice as none of us are trained to. I sometimes get a hoarse voice but nothing to do with my breathing. Have a word with your GP or nurse see what they say. Have a great day and please keep posting take care😊 Bernadette and Jack 🐕 xxxxxx

Hi thanks all for the replies. Found this site really helpful and hopefully will get more info once they complete his staging.

My voice goes all croaky when I’m having a conversation, it’s very embarrassing! I have emphysema.

Welcome to the forum, Momo. I've been getting the croaks in this hot weather. Just glad it didn't happen when I was teaching English. I find Strepsils helpful as long as I don't feel a cough coming on. Best wishes to you and your son. I'm sure the medics will be able to give him helpful advice.

I also have Emphysema and use a variety of inhalers and I am croaky all the time despite rinsing my mouth and so on. Seems to be part of the condition.

He may be tensing his throat which will make the air get forced through. Try some diaphragm breathing exercises. The easiest one to describe is: lie down on the floor with a book on your stomach, and make the book rise and fall by breathing. All the best.
