Contemporaneous exposure to air pollution may influence the severity of COVID-19 illness and increase the likelihood people will die from the disease, a team of Georgia State University economists says.
The team examined daily air pollution data collected from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) monitoring stations across the United States as well as COVID-19 mortality and caseload data from the Johns Hopkins University Center for Systemic Science and Engineering. Their study harnesses plausibly random changes in wind direction, which lead to large fluctuations in air pollution, to assess the relationship between air pollution exposure and COVID-19 caseload and mortality. The researchers used cell phone data and state-level policies adopted to curb the spread of the virus to control for social distancing measures. They found that between Jan. 22 and Aug. 15, decreases in contemporaneous exposure to fine particle air pollution are linked to decreases in confirmed COVID-19 cases and decreases in mortality.
...........“We know that policymakers have no room to change past exposure to pollution,” said Carattini. “But they have power to change the current conditions and the future.”
Our neighbours (behind our house) insists on having bonfires for days on end which due to the normal wind direction means that we get covered in the smoke and smell.
That is despite them knowing that I have a couple of lung conditions and we repeatedly have asked them to stop, at least during the pandemic.
Any information like this to support my arguments is greatly appreciated. Maybe our neighbours will pay a bit more attention now they may be at increased risk themselves.
I am hoping that you can maybe drop a kindness card through their letter box, to say that you are worried about the Covid19 situation and your lung condition is not good! The pollution caused by the bonfire 🔥 is a great concern for us all to be mindful of consequences of our actions! Have a plan and let them know that you are just wanting to stay safe ! All the very best
Thanks for your support! I have tried the kind way and hoped for compassion and understanding but no success so far. Bonfires are a real nuisance, it's a shame they have not banned them from housing areas.
Have you a neighbourhood watch that you can get in touch with? Maybe get in touch with your local M P and ask what he can do to support you? Don’t let the opportunity to make a difference for you and all other like minded, just be pushed under the rug ,so to speak 🤔
I think you should. Environmental should take notice when you have actually spoken to the people concerned in causing the polluton, . People burn rubbish to save calling refuse department sometimes and that is awful. You used to be able to rely on t environmental health once, no more i live near railway and i find one goods engine is not up to standard causing atrocious fumes, and they told me to call network rail. Typical. Told them what i thought of that!
I'm not too surprised at all by the scientists findings and it's been previously mentioned on this forum that air born transmission definitely plays a part in COVID-19 virus being able to relocate itself, by itself. 😕☹️. 🐿🌈
