May I ask how many hours you sleep each night?

May I ask how many hours you sleep each night? I would like to know to compare with the hours I sleep! If you find difficulty in sleeping do you do something to pass the time such as reading, listening to music. Thank you.

Hi sarcoid, I sleep ok but Pete usually sleeps anything from 5-6 hours in bed and then gets up at around 4-5.30 to go downstairs to his recliner chair. He might get another couple of hours in before I get up. Pete is always tired and usually naps throughout the day.

Hope that helps. Xxxx

ditto only with me its usually about 2-2.30 and I nap in the afternoon for about an hour. I once read Maggie thatcher slept for 4 to 5 hours and then got up and run the country lol

Hi sarcoid - I have a Fitbit so can say reliably that it varies! Probably average between 6-7 hours a night. If I cannot get to sleep or wake up during the night and cannot get back to sleep I read until I feel sleepy again.

Hi,i normaly sleep at least 7-8 hours but never go to bed before 01.00hrs and often have to make a toilet visit once during the night, but i always have a late nightcap or two which could explain the visit,i also have an alarm cat that forbids further sleep. :)

I sleep around 8 hours, but I never feel refreshed. And I normally wake up at least once a night.

I got an Apple Watch recently and a sleeping app and I guess leaving out getting to sleep and night time lol visits it’s around 8 hours. I used to get less but I’ve tried to be a bit more kind to my body and heart. I still yawn to death in the morning too even though I’ve slept enough

Hi, I never go to bed before 2 or 3 am and am usually awake by 6 or 7 am, having been awake to go to the loo at least once or because I am uncomfortable.

I gave up going to bed 18 months ago as I couldn't get comfortable in bed any more and took to sleeping on the sofa, propped up with pillows. I used to slip down in bed from extra pillows but find I don't do this on the sofa.

I used to be an avid reader but find it hard to concentrate now and have found in the past that listening to music or the radio doesn't stop my mind wandering (and often worrying).

Since spending nights on the sofa I have found that night time TV (other than rolling news or teleshopping) is a good distraction and often helps me to sleep. I have it on all night with the volume very low. If I wake up I watch it for a while and find it often helps me to doze off again.

Looking back this pattern began with a flare up and bad chest infection and, although I have tried going to bed normally several times in the past 18 months I haven't managed to spend the night there although I have hoped that I could. In the end I think that whatever gets you through the night, when things often seem to be worse, is the most important thing.

What do you find helps you?

My sleeping habits are almost identical to yours CDPO16 except I sleep on a sort of fold up camp bed as my couch isn't long enough. I get about 6 or 7 hours of sleep and am never asleep before 2 am often awake till 4 ish . I like the quiet of the night 😀

CDPO16 in reply toGladwyn

Hi there. You do seem to have a similar pattern though perhaps sleep a bit longer than me. Unlike you, I can't do with silence any more when once I loved it hence the TV on all night. It's amazing how much this dammed lung disease has affected my life, none of it in a good way!

I'll think of you during the nights when I'm awake.

I like the quiet of the night with no people about or traffic , in normal times ofcourse, but I have the telly on all night as a distraction against gloomy thoughts .... if that makes sense lol. Your not alone in the night , I'm about too. 😄

My sleeping habits are much the same and I rarely get more than 4/5 hours sleep at night. Rely on daytime naps, so much easier to prop self up on settee. TV or radio on low in background.

Hi, those of us having poor nights seems to be growing in number since this topic was raised. Nice to know I am not alone. Can't nap during the day though so enjoy that when you can.

Angelagone profile image

I have always been a poor sleeper so cant blame it on my lungs entirely. Without the daily nap I couldn't function as I just get so tired. I'm afraid I've got into even worse habits since the lockdown, binge watching box sets then going to bed about 5 in the morning.

Hi. They actually do seem worse at night, I'm not sure why, I'm really a night person, so I'd imagine that mines should have been feeling worse in the day, when I get sleepy, but it is worse for me at night when I can't sleep

Pete has the tv on low when downstairs. He dozes off and the tv turns itself off after a while. I think his time in hospital with sepsis made his sleep pattern worse.xxxx

I am quite envious of those that can sleep eight hours.

I go to bed at 23.30, give Dingo cat his cuddles and get him settled, read a bit.

I always wake at 01.30 I have no idea why, then go back to sleep and awake again at 04.00 and that’s a good night. There are nights when I don’t really sleep at all, I try not to nap during the day.

I can't remeber the last time I slept 6 hours let alone 8 and am also envious of those who do. I have never been able to sleep during the day no matter how tired I am. I'll think of you too tonight and hope that you manage to have a reasonable one.

As a general rule, about 8-9 hours. Since I’ve been on a higher dose of steroids, about 8-9 minutes! Aaah. Nah, I’m exaggerating but I don’t sleep well on steroids. :(

Go to bed around 11.30, usually get 8 hours though if novel is gripping, I keep reading too long. One journey to loo during night.

Occasionally I get obsessed with some ongoing household task, which takes a few days e.g. gardening, diy, then i get manic and find it hard to sleep. Occasionally anxiety keeps me awake.

Otherwise generally ok.

I seem to be all over the place. When i am on steriods i hadly sleep until i get so exhausted i just crash.

I am ofter awake until 4am. Then drop off till about 9.30. Abd another night i crash about midnight and wake about 5. So

No real pattern. If my breathibg is bad i seem to breath through my mouth and my mouth and throat being dry wakes me up.

I never tend to get no more than 4 hours in before I wake up, loo or coughing, sometimes get another 3, sometimes no more. Use books and radio and sometimes relaxation CD. Have to use daytime catch up, or get too fatigued, although daytime sleeping often leaves me with a head ache.

About 6-7 hrs, although I wake a couple times & have to pee at least once. I feel tired most of the time. How I miss being in my youth and sleeping like a log until noon!🤣🤣

I can't sleep at night, I just watch movies and television shows because I have a terrible time trying to sleep at night. But, I've always had a tougher time sleeping at night before the COPD because of my mental illness and anxieties, yet I was able to sleep half the night. Now, I can't sleep in the night because of the COPD

I am the same as hopetorun but not on steroids. I am all over the place especially in the last six months and rarely get six hrs. Last nite dropped off about 8.30pm and was awake again at 11pm dropped off about 11.40pm and woke at 1.50am. Been awake since then. I usually read a book or watch tv. Feel tired all the time lately.

I watch tv on timer until l fall asleep. Then l wake around 4am, watch some more tv snoozing until 6am when l get up. My tv keeps me company in the long, dark hours.

I used to regularly wake up about 1.30, and find it impossible to get back to sleep until 4ish. Generally I used to listen to Steve Allen on Lbc, his droning voice used to send me off again!. But now I have a hot milky drink, ovaltine, I love the taste, and this enables me to sleep till about 6 am.

I nearly always doze for a few minutes while watching TV early evening normally goto bed around 10.30 and read for at least half an hour to an hour then sleep for around 8 hours. Have to get up in the night for the bathroom but can normally get back to sleep ok. I have a Dyson fan running all night by my side of the bed

ladytelita profile image
ladytelita in reply togingermusic

Why do have a fan running? Do you run very hot without? Is the dyson fan worth all that money? I ask only because I tend to run super hot and most fans make noise so no good at night.

gingermusic profile image
gingermusic in reply toladytelita

I do find I am very hot during the night even in winter plus I have trouble breathing most of the time even though on oxygen now 24/7 so we bought the Dyson Pure Cool me and yes at £299 it is very expensive but since using it I manage to sleep all night whereas before I would be waking constantly. I also like the fact this cleans the air around me as well as acting as a fan. The higher number you have it set on the louder it is but I run mine comfortably on no 2 setting and am barely conscious of it and it sits on my bedside table right next to the bed, I was really surprised at how much better I slept with it

hi sarcoid it would appear there is no definite sleep pattern it must depend upon individuals age life, style and health it is not something I would worry about so long as you feel ok.

watergazer profile image

Hi sarcoid- my sleep is variable sometimes 2-3 hours a night- rarely 7. I usually wake around 1.30 then maybe every 2 hours when sometimes I can get back to sleep and sometimes not. I have tried herbal remedies, yoga before bed, reading, zopiclone, anti histamines, foods to help you sleep and more recently sleep apps and sleep hypnosis on my phone. I go to the toilet a couple of times a night too. Anita x

I used to be able to sleep for England as my dad would say but not since I reached 50

Hi janbis I went to see my doctor a few months ago when I was hardly sleeping and looked dreadful. Last time I asked for zoplicone he said no but this time he relented. I only have a few but they are there if my sleep is really bad. However when I did take one I still woke up a lot🤷‍♀️

JanBis profile image

Hi Dickinson 1954 I will try asking doctor again and hope like yours she relents 😂😂I did find that the 3.75 tablet I still woke up a lot but with the 7.5 tablet I either slept straight through or woke up once. I used take them like when my sleeping was really bad, but about 3years ago the surgery out a stop on the zopiclone 😞😞 thank you for replying Jan

Hmmm well these days I usually sleep around 12 hours. However that sleep is pretty awful. I rarely get and REM sleep, so no dreams but also poor quality sleep which is constantly and repeatedly disturbed by waking or partial waking throughout. I am often very tired when I get up and have been known to try for longer if it was a very bad night. I also wake most days in a great deal of pain in my lower back and legs. I have to shuffle and roll out of bed (it is high off the ground with two mattresses) and then it takes a while for the pain and aches to ease along with the stiffness.

Most GP’s put it down to my medications for my poor sleep pattern.

On those really bad nights Red Dwarf comes to my rescue. I play it on my phone but don’t watch it. Just listen to the voices and words. They are incredibly familiar to me, having watched them since my late teens. If all else fails I play games on my phone until I doze off still playing. This is fine if the phone is plugged in. If not it may not have much charge left in the morning.

Hi sarcoid,

I sleep very little and it is interrupted sleep, unfortunately. I use to get up and play sudoko, but now I get back into bed and count, various things - how much money I have, how much can I afford to spend etc., this I find helps, as it is logical!

I have never been good at sleeping often just 4 hrs a night. I have started going to bed later, maybe 11pm. I do recommend you give that a bash. I don't have an afternoon nap. Now I get a good 7 hours most nights. Difficult question because we all differ in our sleep needs. Also I live quite close to the Gatwick flight path and the flights stop around 11, of course flights are pretty non existent at the moment. Maybe that's the reason. The birds wake me in the morning, but I am not complaining about that! Camomile tea is good. No IPad or telly in bedroom! Good luck, it can be quite lonely on your own in the early hours.

I used to think I slept all night plus a couple of hours in the afternoon, even then I always felt tired. I got a smartwatch at Xmas to monitor my sleep but found that it never recorded any sleep at all. I just assumed it was not working properly until i was lucky enough to have a sleep test. It showed that even thou I thought I was asleep I was actually waking, up to 100 times a hour. My life changed overnight after having a CPAP machine. on the first night my watch recorded 10 hours sleep and when i did awake i felt refresh and full of energy, no more afternoon naps since.

If you do have sleep problem i would urge you to contact a sleep clinic. Sleep apnoea effected my life for years and probable caused my heart rhythm issues. And at least now i dont have to take my watch back.

My sleep varies around 6 hours I think. I often go to bed with Andrea bocelli ( in my earbuds) as I have tinnitus . Otherwise I read my kindle and sometimes end up having a bed picnic🤫if I can’t sleep until early hours. Sometimes I get so engrossed in my reading I have to finish the book but only if I don’t have to get up early for work. Sleep patterns all over the place since being on shielding but absolutely love sleeping in the spare room so cosy with a good story to read, latte and nice cake etc etc( bed picnic) feel like a naughty child sneaking around in the night for food/ goodies nearly falling over a rugrat or two🤫

Hi, usually have around 4 hrs at night, or maybe 5 hours on a good night. I pass time away with my kindle. I tend to wake when my airways dry out, have water and sometimes can return to sleep. I find early mornings are good for getting delivery grocery slots!

If i had read all this earlier i would not have complained about poor sleep but o i did and now i am trying to do a sleepstation cure. Does anybody know how long it is before going back to sleep after waking . I go to bed at 12.30 and used to wake ar 5.30. Then i started the course and had to report how long i was awake in night . I what time i wake but how on earth do i know when i go back to sleep, . Do not look at clock ! Forbidden so i gnored the awake part as it was the only way to complete the record they wanted ! Now i have to go to bed at 12.00 and get up at 5.00 !!

No daytime sleep allowed.

It usually takes me at least 30 minutes to drop off, and then sleep for 2 to 3 hours. After that I wake up every hour or so until I give up and get up at about 7.30. I listen to audiobooks on my iPod with the sleep timer set for 15 minutes. It takes a long time to finish a book!
