Thank you again 2greys. It seems as if we haven’t got it right! Shock horror!

China has their act together now as does Italy but not us and probably other countries. We’re at loggerheads with the WHO who also feel we have got it wrong. Oh dear. Xxxxx

Exactly. I fear we’ve got it all wrong and should be approaching things differently. Let’s hope Boris and all see sense. Xxxxx

"Next week the UK is set to ban large scale gatherings of more than 500 people and give police new powers to detain infected people if they break self-isolation rules."

Just how are the police going to know who is infected? It is self isolation, there is no register of the infected. This is just more bluster and propaganda, big words with no mustard. I am not personally fooled one bit by it.

Some might believe it, not all will. The police are not going to know you from Adam out in the street. They cannot post a policeman outside every door. They certainly will not be able to tell the difference between one of us, out of breath, struggling to walk and someone who is infected and breaking the rules. Once again they have not thought it through.

That’s very true 2greys. My son is a police officer so I’d love to know what he thinks. Xxxx

My son is the same. He done 22 years in the army including tours to Afghanistan etc so he does not panic but he says the police are stretched. He was picking my grandaughter up at 4 in the morning from my son in law at the hospital as he wanted to stay with his wife our daughter. But he still went on duty this morning because they are short of police officers and pcso’s how can they be expected to do any more x

Sadly most of the government advisors are academics. They look at Statistics and say with confidence we are four weeks behind the Italians. What they actually mean is we are 4 weeks behind in what we should have done. The only way to stop spread is to isolate. They failed miserably to contain it. Many noted front line doctors told them they were wrong! Their answer "Our experts have advised us". But expert in what. Slide rule analysis of outbreaks and prediction of spread. .Trying to predict this virus is like eating jelly with a fork you are only going to end up in a mess. They have ignored sadly basic infection control which is to isolate and contain.

That’s it BB academics who are not listening. Our Prime Minister doesn’t have a clue either. Xxxx

I don’t think it’s academics who are the problem. They’re doing their best to help. Nor are academics in other countries posing any problems. In fact the academic and scientific community is pretty much united in thinking that the UK government are wilfully pursuing a disasterous and dangerous strategy. The problem is our government.

From The Guardian:

Hundreds of members of the scientific community have sent two open letters to the British government, voicing their concerns about the response to the coronavirus outbreak.

One comes from 198 academics in the field of maths and science, calling for urgent measures of social distancing across the UK.

It says: “Going for ‘herd immunity’ at this point does not seem a viable option, as this will put NHS at an even stronger level of stress, risking many more lives than necessary.”

Another letter has been signed by 164 behavioural scientists. It raises concerns about the idea of “behavioural fatigue” – the idea that if the public are instructed to take preventative measures too early, they’ll eventually revert back to prior behaviour.

The letter suggests that this has been a cornerstone of British government policy on coronavirus and sheds doubt on the evidence behind this.

“While we fully support an evidence-based approach to policy that draws on behavioural science, we are not convinced that enough is known about ‘behavioural fatigue’ or to what extent these insights apply to the current exceptional circumstances,” it says.

“If ‘behavioural fatigue’ truly represents a key factor in the government’s decision to delay high-visibility interventions, we urge the government to share an adequate evidence base in support of that decision. If one is lacking, we urge the government to reconsider these decisions,” it ends.

I agree but the Government is only listening to their experts and academics. I have said in other posts that the advice and the decisions they are making go against the opinions of many talented experts worldwide. Let alone in this country. It is a sad and worry situation.
