I am male, 71 and dealing with Bronchetesis which I find increasingly impinges on my ability to enjoy life to the full. I dread catching a simple cold as it always ends up as a chest infection. I take drugs to reduce my blood pressure. I take carbocisteine to help break the congestion i get. I worry about the long term effects of taking this drug. Should i stop every now and then to give my system a break?

Hello, when my GP first prescribed Carbocysteine I asked him if it could be harmful in any way. He told me no, it's quite safe, it doesn't suit some people though. I'm lucky that it does suit me. I've attempted to give it a break during the summer but find myself coughing more with my lungs attempt to expel what's there.

My bronch is mild. I don't think it's a good idea to 'give the body a break', if the mucus remains and builds up in your lungs it leaves a perfect breeding ground for bacteria resulting in infection. There are some very nasty stubborn bugs we can get so it's really not worth risking it Carnut.

Thank you peege

Worry and anxiety are probably what is increasingly impinging on your ability to enjoy life to the full rather than the complaints you mention. If you have good support from the medics, which you sound to have, then leave it to them to do what they trained for years to do and get on with your life.
