Childhood Memories.

When I was but a little lad

I bought a bucket and spade

And granddad took me down the beach

Where castles and pies were made

He helped me make all sorts of things

And we dug a great big hole

I thought if we went really deep

We might well find some coal

Granddad got inside the hole

To dig some more sand out

And we were both so busy

That we didn't hear someone shout

The tide was quickly coming in

With granddad still down there

I tried to get someone to help

But they didn't seem to care

As I was walking home again

They asked why I'm alone

I said I buried granddad

But I've got another one at home

Good morning Mr.D and you've managed to get a 😃 smile out of me again! (If only it could last all day, as today is not one I've been looking forward to as it is the scattering of my recently deceased mothers ashes).

Well life goes on and everyday is a blessing eh? Have a good day yourself😀.

in reply to SquirrelsHolt

Well SH it's a day for remembering your Mum, not for being sad. Would she have thought my rhyme funny, or distasteful, or felt guilty at having laughed at someone's demise? I often do that about my lost loved ones, trying to imagine what they would have thought about things. It keeps their memory alive and gives me comfort. 😘

Yes my Mum would've loved your daily rhymes and she had a clockwork type of routine whereby she did the same things at the same time each day! So it is true in what you said,we do indeed think of what our beloved, departed family members would think of this and that. It is comforting isn't it? It's approaching 3 months since my Mum died and my Dad wanted to wait until now, before scattering her ashes on my youngest sons grave. Both he and I will end up there too. I can laugh about my expectations that when my turn comes to be scattered, one hell of a gust of wind will blow me over onto someone else's grave and knowing my luck ( which is nil) that grave will have some scandalous stories behind it!! Apologies for being morbid but you are a strong man and I feel sure I've not offended you. Who'd of thought I'd be writing this in a reply to your funny rhyme on a Thursday morning!!!

in reply to SquirrelsHolt

I really don't like the word 'morbid'. There's very few instances where the word is used correctly and what we are talking about isn't morbid. I like to hope that my rhymes trigger more than just a giggle or two. 😉😘 Incidently, routine is what enables me to keep going these days and it enables Midge to remind me if I have forgotten something.

Granddads are very precious

I only ever had one

He died when I was very young

So I grew up with none

From what my mum said

And from what I heard

He wasn't a very nice man

So he might himself have been murdered! x

in reply to hypercat54

Nice rhyming, Pussycat. Granddads are different today, much younger and fitter now and Great Granddads are not as rare as they used to be.

My absolute favourite group of all time Cap'n - play any one of their songs and I just melt - I went to the Palladium to see Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers at the age of 10 or 11 - loved him but he never topped The Platters . . . .

Well Master Po i am shocked,i sincerely hope this is not based on fact though i do remember talk of quicksands on Southport beach, perhaps our father was trying to scare us to keep us within sight.

Btw whatever happened to Granny or should i dare not ask. :) x

I only knew one grandad , I absolutely adored him .

He was a farmer lived quite a way from us so didn't see him a lot.

I always was given a fresh brown boiled egg fresh from the hen for breakfast , lovely lovely man .

Nice memories thanks Don for the rhyme 💕X

WHEN this rain stops I shall hop on my scooter and laugh all the way down the prom, thinking about your rhyme. Hope the kids and adults aren't digging huge holes. Enjoy the day xjanex

I just have to make sure Chom doesn't hurt me at the beach Don. 😊😁😂 Another fantastic poem. xx 🌊

I meant "BURY" . Autocorrect. 😑

in reply to Caspiana

Oh, bury? 👍😀 I thought your lovely Chom would never do anything to hurt you. Must be getting a bit slow on the uptake. 😅x

Great poem Don. You never fail to make me smile. Alas I never knew my grandads

in reply to watergazer

Thank you, that's what I like to hear. Today's youngsters are much more likely to get to know their Grandparents.
