Feel for you Thomsk I've noticed over the years the consultants like to play down the lung issue, I don't know if they do it in the hope it will keep their patients more positive but it sure does not help when it comes to applying for PIP especially when consultant puts down on paper playing down the lung issues. It is so frustrating.

I have found in the past the GP is the one that can tell it how it is for you with regard to PIP information.

There is no denying a CT scan result so if you can get a copy of that from your GP I am sure that can help and any other xray results on paper copied to your GP.

Its a very stressful process the PIP process and its important to get all the help you can, don't try and do it all on your own.

There could be a unbiased benefit advisory service in your area or citizens advice beureaux specialist advisor. there is a group on FB as well which could help direct you to appropriate person.

Good luck with your PIP, I know its nigh on impossible with PIP but try not to stress, take some de-stress time as well.

All the very best to you.

There's awful Thomsk, what a blow for you. It does seem that it has been done deliberately with your pop assessment coming up. I really feel for you and hope your assessment goes well. Take care 😊 Bernadette xx

Thank you Bernadette x

When you have your assessment don’t dwell on your conditions. Rather make sure that the assessor knows how they limit your ability to lead your daily life and emphasise the help that you need to do this There is a lot of emphasis now on the anxiety which your state of health and symptoms can cause you which makes it difficult to go out of the house or plan journeys. In my case the anxiety that I will not be able to breathe or have the energy prevents me from using public transport.

Thats one of things she said on clinical examination revels a gentleman who is well at rest his chest is clear his calfs tender his hands are nicotine stained but show no sign of clubbing or cyanosis ! My hands are flipping not stained!! And how does she know about me calfs she dint have her xray specs on ! Coz she dint look or squeeze them and shes also for some un reason put he is independant of all activities of daily living and The reason how they knew i had lung problems in the beginning is coz of my clubbed fingers thats wats getting me mad tho as well as shes saying one of the diagnosis was Desquamative interstital Pneumonitis which is the overwhelming cause of smoking which i already knew this years ago as well as COPD and she saying that intrestingley the arthralgia and myalgia the patient dint mention on his last reveiw in 2016 which i mentioned to my ild gp and it says on my medical record because my new GPwas talking to me about it of which she then says he understand he is waiting a rhumatology apointment and i will ensure they they are aware of the gentleman i boubt this will change our diagnosis in anyway s

in reply to Thomsk

I suspect that this wasn't a respiratory consultant who saw you. To make a diagnosis dependant on clubbing of the fingers is plainly tosh. Anyway you seem to have a variety of conditions which are making your daily life difficult. As I suggested, concentrate on that at your assessment.Good luck

Littlepom. That's how I feel. I have asthma, bronchiectasis, epilepsy and I have panic attacks, mainly because I'm scared to use public transport alone, just in case...it is really dibilatating. That's what noone sees.

Thomsk - PIP is not about your specific illness/es but about how they affect you in managing the activities of daily living. You need medical evidence but the rest of it is down to you filling the forms in truthfully. Many people fall down on this so if you are not given PIP and decide to appeal, maybe seek help with the documentation. It helps to complete a daily diary for a short while , outlining how your illness is affecting you.

You say your consultant is sceptical that you have respiratory disease. You can ask for a second opinion if you wish.

Hi Thomas

Good luck with your assessment . Perhaps it’s an idea to answer every questions only relating to your absolute worse days? And remember apart from assessing you it’s their job to save money/ budgets!!

I’m so sorry that’s some real bullshit sounds to me. They are famous here in the states for making sure you get screwed out of the few dollars government gives for basic survival. That’s why I only see Dr’s now that are in the game of helping ME and not the drug companies or government. It’s hard work seeking good doctors. May I suggest asking your peers there in the UK who they trust /use for docs or who a good person to see when you go for assessments. Please don’t get depressed on the whole issue as nothing good will come of that. Persist in the fight you are worth it as a fellow human being! I’ve had to face similar circumstances and things are better now that I’ve learned who can and cannot be trusted with my best interests. I had a heart valve choking itself out and health insurance denied me til I ended up in ER and a surgeon friend of family came in and took charge moved me to a different hospital, cleared his next morning schedule and took it upon himself to open me up and FIX IT! It was impressive. Somebody’s gonna help you but you must be persistent and learn to be your best advocate! Best of good fortune to you, keep faith and hope at your forefront, I will have you in my thoughts and meditations, please smile something better will happen soon

Go to your Doctor and get them to write to Hospital, means a better result.

And what ever you do,do not get angry,it only serves to get you unnoticed

another time,as you have found out.

Thomsk profile image
Thomsk in reply to syntax

Wat could he say a consultant is higher than a gp arnt they ?

syntax profile image
syntax in reply to Thomsk

Yes,but you see your Doctor more than the consultant, and the Doctor can advise him /her on your condition. My Doctor is always writing to the consultant to advise.

This way more gets done, and l also write to him and the team. This is because l am

always searching the net for new drugs, some the consultant does not know exist.

Hi Thomsk,

My hospital consultant, that I only saw for ten minutes, after a hour's wait, clearly wanted me of his patient's list, as he was over worked.

My FEV1 is 30% and a CT scan showed that I have severe emphysema, but as I don't know if I ever have excaberations, as my breathing is bad most of the time, he deemed I was well enough not to be on his list.

PIP is very much based on what help you need doing day to day activities. I went to the appeal stage and won, on a paper appeal, even after telling them honestly what the lung consultant had said.

Good Luck on Monday - the whole process is very stressful and insulting - no one should have to go through it, if they're ill.

So sorry to hear your struggling it’s a bad habit hospitals have of altering the facts of an an appointment in a letter and then the pip issues come in to play. It’s a minefield I’ve had an assessment just waiting to hear. I hope your assessment goes ok and you get the help .

General information about PIPS Assessments - if you feel that you have a genuine entitlement. Emphasise what you ARE UNABLE to do.e.g unable to walk more than 20 metres, unable to cook for oneself, unable to dress without assistance, unable to attend to one's personal hygiene. The assessors pay little regard to medical reports (which, of course, is entirely wrong) and base their assessment almost entirely on what you tell them and what they observe and don't fall for the old trick whereby they will deliberately drop something to see if you jump up to pick it up. Do not exaggerate your symptoms The assessors primary aim is to ensure that you don't get the benefit. These comments are not designed to cheat the system but to give some advice to people who are properly entitled. I hope this is of some help to people who are being improperly denied their entitlement and, of course, you can always appeal the decision if you feel that it is wrong.
