I have body mass protein powder from Holland and Barrett. I make the choc one up in my bullet ( half the daily amount) with milk, a banana and peanut butter and drink it over the day. I managed to put on 7 pounds over a month. I got tired of ita couple of weeks before Christmas and lost the weight again. So I just started it again!

what brand did you buy...

ON optimum nutrition serious mass calorie rich protein source. You can find it pn Holland and Barrett website. I just couldn’t stick the ones from the doc. They were awful. Some people get on with them though.

Have you tried Ensure? My mum was fussy but out of all the ones she tried these were the only ones she liked. They have lots of different flavours and because she was well underweight got them prescribed on the NHS. x

Hello bobbyfloyd..

Yes I use the shakes.. plus the high protein yogurts too...I am lucky enough to have mine supplied by my nutrienteist..since developing Addisons disease, due to having to take to many steriods.. I'd lost over 4 stone.... I am now just over seven stone eight..And petrified of my new rare disease. It's hard enough having to live with very severe COPD and a lung capacity of 24 these days. But! Where there's life there's always Hope...so bobbyfloyed try the protein drinks I think they realy help and they genuinely do support your immune system....Megan..

My dietician suggested using skimmed milk powder instead. My issue is I'm very underweight with low muscle mass- (whether that's COPD related or not is another matter as I'm mild). Like littlepom, I make up milkshakes with about 4 or 5 teaspoons of it in. Along with some strength-building exercises, it seems to be doing the trick slowly. I've put on about 7 lbs in a month or so.

Well done, it’s a real effort isn’t it.

It sure is! And being a fairly unusual problem it garners very little sympathy!! The number of times other women have said something along the lines of "It's ok for you, you're so thin..." it really makes me annoyed. It's not ok at all. I'm thin because I'm ill. I'd gladly swap. xx

And they wouldn’t dare speak to a fat person in the way that they speak to us.

in reply to

Absolutely! I did illustrate this once by retorting to the "You're so thin you must only eat lettuce or something" comment with "Wow. Yeah and you're so fat you must only eat lard or something". It got the point across but not my finest moment!!

It's awful isn't it. All my young life I have had to put up with nasty remarks about my lovely slim figure. Not any more though I can still wear anything I like size 10 with totally inappropriate footwear!

Yes I do. I use whey protein usually an it’s much cheaper to buy it from a bulk store where you weigh out your own b/cuz if you buy a big jug you’re then committed to a flavor you may or may not like. For the best tast you’ve gotta put it in blender w/fruit and other “good for you stuff” I use spinach, raspberries & pineapple juice. It will keep you full longer maintain energy level and indeed help w/muscle growth and repair, gotta exercise or you can get unwanted gut fat. Good luck google recipes for protein shakes👍

I am not a great lover of shakes and smoothies but I do stick to a high protein diet to try and improve my muscles

Thanks for the topic. Medics and friend always try to get more weight on me. Am hoping for tips when I get my pulmonary rehab place. Manage a smoothie with coconut milk, kefir and fruit n honey. Working on muscle building exercises - need weights I think. Good luck with sticking to a regime that works for you.

a little tip given to me by dietitian at hospital for a little extra protein each day. when you made your tea or coffee or cereal and put your milk in it double up your protein by adding a milk substitute like marvel.
