A delicate balance

Yesterday my husband did some of the cooking apparently he added salt to the food. I gained 3 pounds overnight of water weight. It affected my breathing right away and my hand swelled up really bad. Life is a delicate balance lesson learned. My oxygen levels Are really poor today because of the sodium. I guess we just have to be careful.

It does not do your blood pressure any good either. Technically you should not need to add salt, there is already enough in your food for your bodies needs. I have not added salt to my food for 53 years because of slightly high blood pressure, now It is more serious and need meds to control it. Excess sodium can be a killer.

Hi Bobbi6 .

Hopefully the swelling will go down very soon. Water weight is horrible and yes, any extra weight makes breathing so much harder. Take care. xx 😄

I have the same problem with water retention from having any added salt - it can put on 2kg water weight overnight. It's because most of the meds I take are potassium losing, and the body balances potassium with sodium, one of the components in salt. So I take potassium supplements to help the balance, keep it at 1kg rather than 2.

It doesn't help that I love liquorice and liquorice tea, both of which are potassium losing too!

Hi Ergendl! It sounds like we have the same problem indeed. I take a lot of potassium pills and I too love Tea. I did salt does a number so I try not to have it. I just wasn’t in control the cooking that day which was a bad idea. Thanks for your input it was very informative. It is nice to know I’m not alone.
