Has anyone heard of people having success with natural remedies? I am currently reading a book by a lady who says she got rid of her mothers COPD using a mixture of plant based diet, no sugar and various supplements.. It sounds really interesting as she researched everything she did and lists which doctor and his area of expertise. It all seems to make such good sense. The thing that got her started was when her mother stopped smoking, she could not understand why the COPD continued to progress. I came across the plant based diet before whilst reading about diet therapy. I believe that there is still a clinic in Mexico where you can get treatment.
I would love to hear from anybody who has found a big improvement following something other than all these meds that do not make us better.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. It would be so much better than this hand full of different coloured and sized pills. Somehow I don't think I completely rely on diet. Would hate to be worse. Have a good day. Jane
Hi Jane, no she not rely on just diet, she did it in stages. First took away dairy foods, started to see a small improvement. Then she would tackle each symptom with natural remedies. The bit i loved was that she listed everything she did, which doctors, university professors etc. found which remedy. It is true as well when she keeps asking the doctors what causes COPD they cannot provide an answer. I think what got her started was when her mother finally stopped smoking, she thought that there would be a huge improvement, when this did not happen and she questioned the doctors about it, they had no answer.
Surely, if the lungs and airways have already been damaged by smoking, simply stopping smoking is not going to cure someone. There can be some improvement with the correct meds, exercise, diet, supplements and a sensible life style. There are many people on this site who live with copd and have achieved a considerable improvement in their quality of life by combining this with their medications. Be very careful of people who claim to have achieved miracles. There is also someone who has written a book claiming to cure bronchiectasis, which is total tosh. All too often they have close associations with the medics and ‘academics’ who have a financial interest in peddling these ideas and selling the associated ‘lessons’ and supplements. They are usually based in the US or South America. By all means try following the diet programme in combination with the meds but I would suggest being very careful and not giving money to anyone associated with this.
Hi littlepom, no she is not asking for money and she is very careful to state that she only stopped using any med once she could see that it was no longer effective. I agree though that is wise to be very careful of people who make claims about beating these awful diseases. This book seemed really genuine though, her claim throughout was it was her mothers suffering that drove her to this. The doctors had basically given up on her mother who was 72 when it got really bad.
Great advice though littlepom, it is always good to question these claims.
I am sorry but I must disagree. There is at present no cure for COPD. There are many claims by people to have found one but no proof. Very often these claims are made by someone wanting to make a fast buck. To the average man in the street their research can seem very convincing. However after checking the "Doctors" and "Research" you find they lack any credentials and often are all involved in a fringe research centre and lack any qualifications at all except the ones they gave themselves.
Hi Badbessie, i agree that we should always be cautious of these claims regarding sickness and disease. The difference here with this author is that most of the claims are really common sense anyway. I had already heard that dairy foods can be bad for COPD, there is also plenty of research into plant based foods helping the body to heal itself. The supplements she mentions are for specific symptoms.
I threw out the question about alternative healing because i know some of the people on here are trying a different approch. I know from personal experience that all the meds i take only help relieve the symptoms for a short time.
I am hoping that someone might have found something that helps more than the meds.
I do agree we should always be cautious of these claims.
I wouldn't trust a single US medical site. They don't do regulation or proof, combined with a dodgy and expensive healthcare system people are more likely to try a snake oil salesman. A diet which is largely fruit and veg, low in salt sugar, little or no booze and no fags is obviously better for you, and you will obviously feel better. Won't cure you though.
Exactly, it cannot do you any harm and should help your general health at worst. It was a book on Amazon and i am usually put off by books that claim cures, the title was mis-leading though as it was a long process. The author tackled one symptom at a time really, she never set out expecting to “cure” her mothers COPD . Also what works for one may not work for others.
One thing though, we have to keep trying, we have to keep looking. I for one feel terribly let down by my GP practice. I get that we are in London, I get that it is a busy practice, for me personally they have done nothing. They took two years to diagnose my COPD. Surely my going there at least once a month saying “I cannot breathe” should have given them a clue. All they do for me is to issue my prescriptions, they even wanted to limit those but i got my consultant to overule them.
This is why i am looking elsewhere for answers
I feel the NHS have very few ideas on how to help improve my situation. This is my personal situation , i know some people have had good experiences with the NHS, sadly i have not.
I absolutely agree with you, some of our greatest advances in medicine come from American researchers. Your universities have financed a lot of good doctors. Sadly in England the shortage of money will always hold us back.
I don’t know why “Inamoment” made those comments as the information i spoke about was from a book. Yes some of the research she mentions is being done in America but she also quotes research from all over the world. To get answers for these awful diseases we have to be openminded, who knows where a cure may lie.
Come on, i think you know i wasn't referring stanford but rather the hundreds of people flogging dodgy cures with dubious qualifications and dubious claims. Just because it is in a book doesn't make it valid. I stick to they nhs for advice, they aren't trying to make a profit
I got rid of phlegm from inflammation by using Chinese Herbs via a registered practitioner. Beginning taper from tomorrow (halving the dose) so will be interesting to see if phlegm stays away.
Well the fact it got rid of it is something. For me it is one of the worst symptoms of my COPD. My GP won’t give me anything for it , they say it will interfere with other medications i am taking. I have a Chinese practitioner near me so thank you for that .
