does anyone have any tips for getting stubborn mucous out of the throat? It doesn't matter how if I force a cough to try and clear it, it just won't shift and brings my voice up octaves so only dogs hear me. It's driving me mad.

I find Nippets help to loosen it a little, Nippets are like Imps, those tiny liquorice cough sweets that they stopped making. Even plain liquorice seems to help a little, and drinking more water will help to thin the mucus making it easier to shift.

I have had very hard to shift mucus and was given a tablet that I take twice a day and it has helped a lot to shift it is carbocisteine! Only on Prescription I think?

Thats what i take too..Ask for a flutter valve at gp or nurse/physio. it opens airways to make it easier to cough up.

Unfortunately I have had to learn to live with it. Tried most things but still can’t shift it. I hope you have better luck than me

Go to a good health food store & get yourself some 'N-Acetyl Cysteine', does the same jpb as Carbo Cysteine, but with wider ranger health benefits, such as promotion of Glutathione!

Trust me, I started taking this in March & literally do NOT suffer from mucus retention now!

Same here, NAC dries up my mucous

Helps my husband no end! No more loud 'hurumphing' and clearing noises anymore - heaven sent is acetyl cysteine.

Gargle a cup of hot water with 1/2 teaspoonful of salt last thing at night and again in morning and maybe once or twice during the day if necessary. And if you think it may come from your sinuses try a saline wash neti pot.

Works for many.

And as said above Carbocisteine is good. Get it on prescription from your GP.

Hope some or all works for you - I know from personal experience, it drives you bonkers.

My GP recommended the sinus wash. I tried it once and felt like I was drowning. I will persevere with it. Thank you.

1 or 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water. Gargle several times a day. Also, use a salt pipe/inhaler if you're not already.

I take carbocistene, 2 tabkets 3 times a day, prescribed by my GP. I have trouble getting to sleep at night because the mucas rattles around in my throat. I find huff coughing helps. Lots of videos on YouTube on techniques. The vibration from the huff shifts the stuff in the throat.

NAC supplement works for me and I always gargle with weak warm salt water after my inhalers otherwise I loose my voice.

A hot cup of tea really helps to loosen the phlegm ,

Re Festie's reply "I find huff coughing helps" I agree, but if you type Huff in to Google I don't think you will find the videos. I think Festie means Active Cycle of Breathing Technique also known as huffing. There are lots of videos on YouTube by physiotherapists. I was taught in hospital by a physio and it completely changed my sleeping as before I could not lie down and had to sleep sitting up.

Hi, have you tried Carbocisteine? it helps to loosen the mucus & therefore make it easier to get up.. Try a Capella a bit of a beast to carry around but it acts like a warbler & eventually up comes the mucus. Finally try a little widget from Clement Clarke it's a short tube you "huff" into & that also makes the mucus come uo.

DHD are the makers of Capella, Clement-Clarke.com (All lower case) make the little widget. I've used all 3No & it's helped me.

Hopefully something from this lot could help you.

My doctor thinks it may be due to silent acid reflux and prescribed me Lansoprazole but I only took them for four days as I didn't see a change and they made me feel ill.
