Had not done a profile as I hadn't thought it necessary. Am coming up to 74. Had Copd for about 18 years. Am totally deaf thanks to menigritis at a young age. This forum is my lifeline to information as medics ad nurses can't or won't spare the extra time needed to talk to me slowly and clearly so I can lipread

Hello Grandma3 and welcome!!
Looks like you joined some time back and this is your first post. I hope your care providers will improve in how they care for you with their use of time.
I once told a consultant, (i knew I would not be seeing him again!) that I could not hear him because he was mumbling. He was taken aback. Obviously nobody had ever said that to him before. I do what I can: I have hearing aids and keep them clean, change the batteries as soon as they need it etc. Then it is up to those who are speaking to us. I know that 75% of his patients will go out to their partner or friend in the waiting room and say: "Couldn't hear a word he said." But few will challenge them.
Please try and insist with them. Being deaf is horrid, and not our fault.
All the best

Hello, nice to meet you Grandma3. Folk seem to be in too much of a hurry to take time for others these days. It the modern world I'm afraid, the bosses want more work done in the time so they rush rush rush. Glad you've found us and as you've seen, we like a chat and a laugh so make yourself at home x
HI grandma 3 , im also a deaf person classed as,, ive still got 35 per cent left lol, as menigitus left me deaf in mi teens , my left ear is stone deaf , that was explined in later life when i had a brain scan, and small brain scaring on the left side brain hence deaf on the left ear, nice of you to join us though.
Welcome grandma my hearing isn't to good I swear some people talk quietly to annoy me lol take care
Hello grandma3 . So glad you are here. My grandad used to be very deaf so I understand your frustration at the hospital. Some of the verty good staff got a small blackboard especially for him so they could write down what they wanted to say so he wouldn't get too tired trying to understand it all. Take good care.
Cas xx
Not hearing well is so frustrating. I have hearing aids but rarely put them in. Every time I do it seems the battery runs out. It does seem as if people are deliberately whispering. I am afraid of missing something vital at the doctors or the hospital but even when you say you can't hear very well, they still don't speak up. And accents are particularly difficult. Iris x
Welcome grandma3
Welcome grandma3. We always have time for each other here. Sue x
I understand ...I do get frustrated and embarrassed when I keep having to ask people to repeat themselves. My daughter says she knows my hearing is going as I put the tv on higher than 28..........gosh these daughters don't miss a trick.
I developed Menieres disease 25 years ago, so tinnitus has been a companion. I don't notice it. Got a hearing aidfrom the NHS, hated it, it just made the mumbeling louder in proportion to the back ground racket. Wife of many years STILL doesn't take into account my hearing loss! My maw was the same with my Dad.
I ignore everybody now, if they want me they can give me a dunt
Lungs doing OK, stopping smoking using tge e-cig has been a breeze. The fiddly bits are better than rolling and doesn't leave wee bits of baccy all over the kitchen :-).
Oh, welcome BTW
