A Case Of The Gimmes...

Sometimes...not often...I'm overcome by a case of the gimmes. Throwing myself on the floor and drumming my heels, because I want it and want it now...

It'll be a book I've read about or seen advertised perhaps...top of the list at present is The Dublin Tenements...black and white photographs and stories of the people who lived in those cramped, overcrowded and distinctly unhygienic rooms...another one, on my wish list with Amazon for the longest time, is Leprosy in Mediaeval Ireland. It costs an arm and several legs though, so it'll have to carry on waiting...

This afternoon I found a place on-line in Ireland that sells stuff to soften up Fimo clay that's become seriously hard and honestly you'd have thought I'd won the Lotto...I was seriously over-excited and ordered some immediately.

Some time ago I was shopping in Sligo town and ventured into a funny little shop that sold odd bits and pieces from India and Tibet...there was a Yak saddle bag on display which was seriously expensive and way out of my budget...but the woman who ran the shop took it down from its place on the wall and showed me how it'd been stitched together with long Yak hair...pressed my nose against it and it still smelt faintly musky. I tipped the contents of my purse out on the counter and said, I'll take it please...

Then I was worried in case it wasn't 'real'...maybe it was some sort of replica made for gullible people...a while later I was looking at some National Geographic photographs...many were taken in Tibet by a photographer who'd added his e-mail. There followed a lengthy correspondence between the two of us...he reassured me from the photos I sent him, that the saddlebag was the genuine article...

I don't lust after new kitchen gadgets...wouldn't dream of queuing outside a shop all night to buy a cheap television or a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes...don't give a fig about the very latest mobile 'phone or those tablets that do everything but the washing...I'm still getting to grips with the laptop.

Only bought the new camera because it was in a sale and has a serious zoom lens...

Have the gimmes when there are fresh Strawberries for sale...especially sold at the side of the road, straight from Kildare...Himself dare not drive straight past...I wouldn't speak to him for the rest of the week if he did...

Coming back from a day at the ocean means piping hot, salty, greasy chips from the little shop in Tubbercurry...that gives me a really serious case of the 'I Want Now' actually now I come to think about it that tiny chip shop must do a roaring trade from customers who've wended their way over the narrow roads of the Ox mountains after a day spent watching Dolphins playing and exploring the deep rock pools...men in baggy shorts with horribly wind-burned shoulders standing in the queue with a couple of fractious children demanding Coca Cola...we exchange knowing smiles and say it's been a grand day altogether.

But my gimme of today was the little packet of stuff that softens hard as a rock Fimo clay...

Ha....that takes me back to Coronation year and a gimme it now moment I have never forgotten......throwing a mardy because I wanted a cardboard model coronation coach with glitter ....immediately, and the shops were shut. That was a long time ago.

I went to a Fimo workshop recently....lots of ladies of a certain age having fun with clay.

Another lovely post...thank you

Great post once again Vashti and it made me think of the History of our Streets about the chap who mapped out London streets by working out the type of people and their status. It was fascinating and I was lucky to see the t.v. series and get the book as a gift. I do like to get things immediately too.

I also thought of a couple we met when we had a holiday place in Spain (sold up in 2003) who came from Sligo. Very nice they were and had about 5 children I think. They were Roe and Mary Finnegan from Barnasraghy, Sligo. Fond memories.

Take care xxxx

I meant to look the link up...do that later...saw an idea for making stunning book covers from Fimo...though the girl who makes them is a real artist...leaves and flowers and even a dragon!

Forgotten that song...lol now it's going round in my head...☺☺

I don't do gimmy right now. I would have got my legs slapped go and hard. I do list after things & give out big hints. By the time I persuade myself to go for it it's vanished of the face of the earth can't find one anywhere. Then I sulk it's not a good system I think I will try your system. Thanks for the story. What are you going to make xoxoxox
