I haven't posted for a while. 4 years ago my husbands lung function was at 19 percent . He gave up smoking after a bit of prompting from his 4 year old Grandson. His lung function is now at 35 per cent . He can get up and down stairs without being out of breath. Never been on oxgen, as his oxygen levels are 95 per cent. What a difference stop smoking does. I hope he can keep it up as he seams to be doing well . I did give if up for 9 days but as soon as I got home and I started to smell it on people who came to see me I thought one will not hert which I keeped up for a week now I think I smoke around 10 half very thin rollys I got to be honest I did use to ask my boys not to sit by me as I could smell the smoke . And I started to think that I must be a hiporcrit as I have smoked for about 40 years . When I got home I spent a lot longer out by my fish pond as my youngest boy told me as I was not looking for my pump so see I do hope he has a lot more will power than I did

Fantastic news! xx

That's amazing he has double his lung function! I didn't know that was possible but it obviously is. Fantastic. Hopefully he will have a lot longer with you now. x

Hi thanks for your replies. Alan gave up by using the Nicorette quick mist spray. What a difference that made. He smoked for 40 years. Thing the grandson saying he didn't want him to die finally did it. Take care and give it a go.

Oh how I wish that happened to me !

When I gave up ( I had angina and blamed the rollups ) I was ok until 6 weeks later. I was crossing the road and was gasping for breathe. I was diagnosed with very severe emphysema. I'm rather annoyed in a way as I was able to do everything as normal before that, mowing the lawn, chopping wood, walk miles, amateur surfing, you name it. Such is life. :)

You will get there again. Just think of the benefits u gained by giving up. Alan cuts the grass and gardens. Please try. Regards

That is wonderful news. I quit smoking in 1992 because I felt breathless when I ran. Was fine for years until about 2003 when started to feel breathless walking uphill etc. So was given inhalers etc. and carried on as you do. Exercising, working. A couple if chest infections along the way dealt with by antibiotics. Then in 2010 breathing was definitely getting worse. I was struggling just walking up the road. Then in Dec '13 felt really rough and ended up in hospital with a raging chest infection. Spent 2 weeks there then was admitted again in mid Jan'14 for 17 days and finally discharged on home oxygen. {15 hours at 1/2 litre} However, I am 64 and still manage to work 3 days a week with the help of a 'Blue Badge and disability parking at work. I think if my GP had a little more proactive, I may have avoided this deterioration. Obviously we all different but it is always better to seek help before thinks go downhill. Walking is the best thing, apparently. Sound like your son is doing really well.

I was a smoker for 40 years but stopped when diagnosed with COPD 10 years ago. It is total madness not to stop when told you have any serious lung condition. This vile disease is bad enough without adding to it. Yes its hell at first but get through a few weeks and you will never regret it.

My COPD has progressed despite giving up the cigs and my life has become restricted due to the severity but I believe my quality of life would have been even worse had I not stopped.

I'm lucky in a way. After giving up for about six months I've never got the urge or craving to have a fag, so it doesn't bother me anymore. I'm on my second PR at the moment and my goal is to be jogging on the treadmill, rather than walking, by the time this session of PR is up. :)

Very good barst1950

You see it can happen if you look back at my posts by clicking the above round purple sillowet with the word music next to it, then you can see my past posts

that i went from moderate 62% COPD to mild 84% COPD after 14 months after first sprometry lung test.

And i put that down to not smoking after over 40 years of it but must admit still fancy one if i have a glass of wine or a beer has they have always gone together.. but never would now.

Best of luck
