Welcome Tamer. I don't have copd but I would guess you may have read 5 years on the internet somewhere. There are loads of lovely members on here who have had copd for many more years than 5 and I am sure they will be along soon to reassure you and answer any questions you may have. cx

Hi tamer, welcome, don't take to heart all u read on the net, a lot of good info but don't read into life spans. Like many wise people on here who will offer u plenty of support, advice and tips. at this stage u have mild copd, with a few easy decisions u can stay like that or even improve, stop smoking ASAP, eat healthy and exercise. Don't let the nightmare take hold u can control it ( as I was told ). Plz plz don't worry u have plenty of years ahead of you. Take care x Sonia xx

"Hello Tamer, and welcome to you, l too am new here and have been diagnosed with stage 3 COPD a few months back. the advise I was given by the professionals was if you give up smoking and keep myself positive, healthy diet, lots exercise, I should live at least 20 yrs. and I am already age 68, so I plan to be around a long long time. And I am sure you will too. Just keep positive and like cofdrop, and lily26 told you. There will be plenty of others who will give you positive support, and advise that will give you similar advise. you just keep yourself as positive as you can. and old but true saying is.....( think positive, and you will be positive )..Megan"

It's because you are young but you will find you will not realy have many big changes at times when you have all your meds sorted out I went for years and never realy thought about my only big regret is that I did not give up smoking when I was first told so all I can say don't spend your worrying

Hi Tamar I remember another post you put on virtually identical a very short time ago. I don't know what else we can say to convince you that you have a lot longer than 5 years to live! Do you need more reassurance? Or didn't you believe us? If we only have 5 years to live then when I was diagnosed around 5 years ago with mild copd which covers emphysema and chronic bronchitis (I had a fev1 of 73 then) then this is a ghost writing :)

No one can tell you or any of us how long we have to live but there are people on here with a 1/3 or 1/4 of your lung function who have been that level for many years. I reckon you will be around age 120 before you get to anywhere near that level. Unless you worry yourself into an early grave that is! x

Hi coughalot, totally agree with you, I've just looked back and seen the post aswel, like u sed wot more can we say then. How's u anyway, hope ur ok. X Sonia x

I'm ok thanks Sonia. It was very muggy here today so felt a bit sob when dog walking and didn't go as far as I wanted to. I took it slow and careful with a few sit downs. There are loads of blackberries out and I was busy gobbling those :d

Hope you are ok too x

in reply to

It was an odd weather day in Tamworth were I live one minute black clouds then blue sky and gorgeous sunshine, I popped to asda as it's my youngest daughters birthday tomoz she'll be 14, growing up so fast but still loves a birthday cake lol didn't want to do to much so I can atleast spend most of the day with her. U take it easy on ur walks and don't scoff to many blackberries. Big hugs x Sonia x

in reply to

Didn't know you had a daughter Sonia. 14? Bless her. Hope she has a great birthday - shame on you not baking her a cake :d xx

in reply to

Can't bake to save my life, can cook just not bake . I have four kids , 3 girls and a boy, my eldest girl is 22, then my son 19, and then 2 girls 15 & 14. love em all to bits, they are all so good and help me loads, just a shame they've all got to be tested now to see if I've passed on the alpha 1 gene to them. Fingers crossed I haven't. X Sonia x

Tamer just perk up. There are many on here with a FEV1 down to as low as 20 maybe lower and they are still living and determined to stay alive a while yet. Mine is 32% but if I had your attitude I would probably be much lower. It has been 32% for two years. Get up get on get out there and live. You are very lucky to have been diagnosed early. Try hard please.

Hi Tamer1234, I was diagnosed with mild copd in March this year, my specialist said that as long as I looked after myself and stayed active I would be fine for many years to come, and I should be able to life a normal life. I feel fine right now and intend to stay that way.Stay positive and live well.

How long you will be around no one knows...they are saying that based on outcomes they have seen with other people who are in the same health boat as you. Get all the testing they say you should have done done. Get a second opinion. Make the necessary changes and live everyday to the fullest! Good luck!

Hello Tamer, some sensible advice been posted to you. I am another one who has had COPD for more than five years, with good sensible living I have deteriorated very little over a five year period except my breathing. Living proof like many others on here, that it is not a death sentence, take it as a warning to live a healthier life and you will survive for many years to come I am sure. Ok I am disabled by it but it is possible to make adaptations to enable yourself to lead a reasonably normal life. Time to reassess your life and look to a new future best wishes and good luck.

Everyone is different, I became worse following a bad flare up and massive emotional stress. Recently it has got a little worse but guess that is not bad over a five year span, if that's any help to you. Stages are as found on the day of testing, with PR some people experience an improvement and others go down hill fast. Look on the bright side I would say and treat infections quick so no more damage is done to your lungs, and deterioration is kept to a minimum. Stage progression has no set pattern of time so can't help you with that. Hope you feel well today.

Hi Tamer and welcome,

I don't tag myself every so often. I know I am severe, but I try to maintain a way of life which will stabilise the illness by going to the gym 3 times a week. By the way, I got diagnosed in 1994; that's 20 years ago! Intend to live more than five years! Cheers, Mic

Tamer, I think it really depends on the person. I think it definitely depends on the fact that you can reduce the progression by doing exercises. This is vital for all who are affected by lung diseases.

Have you got a pulmonary nurse? Get referred to her. She would answer this question and would probably talk to you about Pulmonary rehabilitation. Knowledge of how to cope with your illness will give you self confidence.

The probleam iam in saudia arebia they dont have big knolege about this copd or rehab program only they say eat good and stop smoking and go game

helingmic profile image
helingmic in reply toTamer1234

The advice to stop smoking is certainly valid. I would try to find a gym where you can exercise, because that is vital to keep your health.

Here is a set of exercises which you can do without going to the gym. I do these every morning:

I hope this helps.

Welcome to this site I was diagnosed 10 years ago now I'm stage 4 I gave up smoking and took up swimming and try to eat all the right things.

If we were to have a life span of 5 years I would of died 5 years ago, it is true I do things a lot slower put off today what I can do tomorrow, dust on my TV doesn't worry me anymore but eventually I do get things done no room for OCD when you have COPD.

I do have a plan for when I go over to the other side and that is to come back and p**s off as many MP's at no 10 as I can the labour party for setting up Atos the Tories for allowing them to give sanctions I can't go in to detail what tricks I will play on them but I do have a wicked séance of humour but as I'm planning to stay around till I'm 140 to get some of my pension back I will have to wait a while for no 10

There are meds like Spiriva that keep COPD in check. There are also meds like Advair that make berthing easier. One can even have partial lung reduction to make berating easier. I don't see a 5 year death certificate in the cards one is dealt if one works on taking care of COPD.

PompeyBob profile image

If you only have 5 years once you get COPD I must have died about six years ago, no wonder people keep ignoring me lol.
