Don't know what to do

Went for my first follow up appointment after being in hospital with a copd flare up. The Dr straight away said " I don't know why you have been sent to me as I don't deal with your disease but in any case you have a lung nodule which we will check on a follow up CT scan. If it has grown it's cancer and in your case we wouldn't operate not with your lungs " I had the re scan last week and all is well so not cancer I was also told that lots of people had nodules that are no cause for concern.

Needless to say it was a huge relief after a terrible three months of not knowing but I feel that the Dr was very flippant about the whole thing. I keep getting told by family to report him but I don't want any trouble.

Afternoon.

I totally agree, complain. How dare he make you feel like that, this illness is hard enough without idiot doctors.

Hello Mrsmeow, I agree you should not be penalised for stating your opinions. Plus your doctor seems to have overlooked the emotional effect this has had on you.Sometimes a request for a longer appointment allows you to talk more about how you felt to the doctor. Or maybe a chat with the practise nurse may get a better response from the doctor. Doctors are being asked to be more patient friendly these days, but it may take time to get changes. Glad to hear the news was not the worst scenario, I recall many years ago having a cancer diagnosis and when I got home I cried with relief that they treated it quickly. So appreciate what you are saying. The all clear took another two years. Good luck in writing that letter, try to be precise about the facts and how it made you feel.

I agree with your family he must be reported what dreadful treatment and he will only continue if you don't make a stand! Don't do it for yourself do it for others that are seeing him. So pleased to hear it is not lung cancer! What a relief take care TAD xx

Hi mrsmeow,

What a terrible time you have had. Firstly you should not have been made to wait 3 months to find out if you have cancer or not. That is totally unacceptable. Secondly the doctors attitude and manner. My health situation is completely different to yours, but I can unfortunately relate to the doctor situation.

I had a horrendous experience with a doctor a week ago today. I was extremely upset. It would take too long to explain now, but if you can find my post under my activity of a week ago, called" Does anyone have any experience of using Pregabalin which is prescribed for epilepsy and neuropathic pain?" you will be able to read what happened. I had 29 replies, and if you scroll down to the very last post which was from me, then you will see what happened after I had a meeting with a very helpful Practice Manager.

It sounds as if your bad experience is with a hospital doctor, in which case you will have to find out who to report him to, because you should. I had grave doubts about reporting a doctor, and live on an island where there is no other practice, and have no doubt my complaint will do the rounds. However, I feel better for having done it, and I should know the outcome within the next 10 working days. I sent the letter to the Manager, who would pass it onto the Dr, and she has to address all my points made in writing. The manager asked if I would accept an apology from her, and I of course would. If I am not happy with her response, then the complaint goes off the island to someone In Inverness to adjudicate independently. If I am still unhappy, then it goes to the Ombusman. No doctor wants that on their record and all the hassle which will entail.

Although I had doubts about reporting this doctor, because I have no other practice to turn to, and I thought the manager and doctors would stick together. He assured me that this is not the case at all. He actively encourages people to complain if they have a valid one, as he does not want patients to suffer, or stop attending the health centre, which is what I threatened to do.

Please try and find my post about this, and it was through others advice to report the doctor that I bit the bullet and done it. It is best to get it off your chest (no pun intended lol), than let it fester. Good luck with this, and at least you have plenty of family support. Let me know how it goes. Take care, and go for it. Lots of hugs from huggs xxxx

Doctors appear to lack compassion when they deal with these case day after day. I would be horrified if a doctor talked to me in this fashion. It is always important to feed back to the hospital via PALs how you were cared for, we are real people not objects on a conveyor belt.

I feel for you. I had a similar experience and my GPs asked me to complain to ensure they wouldn't have to use that con. I'm ashamed to say that I didn't although I did refuse to see him after 2 appalling sessions. He was a professor in pulmonary at a teaching hospital in SW London.

I hope you find the strength to complain though. Best, Peeg

If you scroll to the bottom of this page where it says "read next". The post I er posted which I mentioned in my first reply to you, regarding my experience with a GP, and having to report her. The post is in the middle of the three posts, which say "read next". Save you hunting for it, in case you wanted to read it. Good luck. huggs xx
