Hi as twiceshy3 say's there a quite a few on here with diagnosed and undiagnosed and various stages degree of the illness.

All depends what you want to know i.e most asbestosis suffers will have heart problems as well as lung problems ...

Depending on degree of illness dictates how active thay are just like any lung heart condition

Morning, what a shock it is and I bet you have done exactly as I did and scoured the internet and frightened yourself even more. This is a long story but my hubby was diagnosed eventually about 6 years ago now. It started originally back in 2001 when he had a persistent cough and they scared the life out of him by saying he may have cancer, he came home from the surgery and threw his cigarettes away and still does not smoke. Thankfully he did not have cancer but was told he had COPD. Nothing much changed apart from he had more colds than me. Everything was ok until we decided to go to Denmark for a holiday and just prior to that he went to the hospital for glaucoma and they gave him some new ointment. Oh what a holiday that was spent most of it in hospital trying to breathe. Anyway returned to the UK, admitted to hospital and from there the diagnosis was made. The most important things to remember are healthy food, exercise (even if you do have to become a Sgt. Major to make them do it) and clean air, you will also find out that there are some things that affect their breathing such as air fresheners or hairspray etc. I have done a lot of digging over this disease and have quite a bit of information on food etc. if you would like it, the other thing is I joined on facebook a group called COPD UK and they have been so helpful, giving me info before we went for hospital appointments so I knew what I was asking and due to this info my hubby is now stable. Apologies for the long post, if you need info or I can help please pm me. Stay strong and remember to look after yourselves as well as your dad.

hse.gov.uk/asbestos/

asbestosvictimadvice.com/faqs/

2 good sites they do not do the scare monger bit but facts.

I was working with asbestos for 10 years in a family business and we cut it on circular saws with no mask or vents! We were told that it was safe the product we were using, as it was not the blue asbestos. I was in hospital in 2008 with a severe lung failure and I and my wife were asked all the time had I worked with asbestos and because of what I was told said no! However 2 years ago I found that I had, it was not the blue but the brown asbestos! I told my GP but was not met with much sympathy or concern. (Under NICE Guidelines I should of been passed over for a specialist appointment within 2 weeks) Late last year I had a spiro after getting stropy with my GP and then past over to a specialist.

The specialist explained that Black is good and white and grey are not on CT scans. And went though my 2008 CT scan, it showed the fibrosis from the infection and then some white blobs to be then told that they may be fluid and moved down to the large grey area on the lower part of my lungs. He turned it off and said we will have another xray.

His letter has got all the dates wrong and he states he has not seen the xray I had recently. The only thing that is certain is I now have 57% lung function when upright and then a further 12.5% drop when flat compounded with a heart condition.

I hope that you and your family can get though this together, take each day as it comes and just think how you felt before you knew. Do not let it rule you.

Be Well

Hi Rosy sorry to hear your news, but you shouldn't panic just look at the facts Asbestosis is a restrictive lung disease as opposed to obstructive basically you Slowy lose the elasticity of your lungs. There are 3 basic types Pleura Plaques (thickening of the pleura), Asbestosis (fibres in lungs) Mesothelioma (tumor). Plaques aren't serious, Asbestosis is a slow deterioration, mesothelioma is more serious. The type will be defined by the CT Scan.

This site and in particular the BLF help line is a good source of information.Though its easy to say but try not to stress to much find out the facts-I was diagnosed with asbestosis 18months ago - Hope this helps -Take care-Plumbob

My brother died from it. My entire family worked in the elevator business. When installing new ones it fell like snow. You need to call a lawyer as there has been many law suits and many pay outs .

My father in law had asbestosis for many years and had a persistent cough and breathlessness. However he managed to keep active and joined a walking group. He had to have a pacemaker fitted eventually. He died of an unrelated cancer 2 years ago aged 87. It took him a long time to get Industrial injuries benefit as he had to trace people he had worked with many years ago but he did get it eventually.

I can totally relate to your shock as we went through the same about 14 years ago. Hubby was told he had COPD and by chance he had his eyes tested and was rushed to hospital with dangerous eye pressures in both. Initially the hospital treated him with drops these in turn affected his chest which was then we found out he had asbestosis. He has since had his eyes operated on to relieve the pressure which worked fine although yesterday we were told that one was failing but we have had good 7 years since the op. The best advice is to make sure the eye drops are compatible with his chest condition, steroids can also cause cataracts but again he has had both done. If you need any further help then please let me know. Take care and good luck
