Hi Claudine, I've had bronchiectasis all my life and I think it is because we use a lot of energy fighting lung infection and lung clearing which most of us need to do every day, at the mo I'm 8st 10lb, about right for me but it will plummet if I get a bad infection.

I to have lost weight av gone from 13 half stone to 11 half now

A know like others i have trouble with my guts bloating plus eat smaller portions

Also like zube says .. could be anything really but we need to try maintain a healthy weight

I'm asthmatic and have bronciectasis and haven't lost weight. When I got pneumonia my weight fell off, but otherwise I have to think about what I'm eating.

I too lost weight only 1 st. but being only 8 st to begin with I looked awful. I have managed to gain it by eating four small meals a day. Consultant told me six but I just can't eat six. Good luck all who need to gain weight or lose weight.

I too have Bronchiectasis and asthma and I haven't lost weight. I think if you are losing weight and you aren't eating less and exercising more to lose it , I would talk to my GP about it.

Tell me your secret Claudine, I have bronchiectasis and just can't seem to lose weight at all. In fact I'm quite a bit overweight. I think it might have something to do with the RA which makes exercise difficult. xx

I think I might have an answer (below) at last. Yes, I guess the RA is your problem. At least I can go to the gym and I know that's good for me because it releases the mucus I need to get rid of! But it's a balancing act all the time.

I lost a lot of weight too and looked awful before I got rushed into hospital last year - I was told that it

was caused by my body's efforts to increase my blood oxygen and because my lungs were so crap I was burning calories just trying to breath. Now I am on medication and home oxygen etc. I have put the weight back on (pity could do now with losing half a stone) - oh well better than fading away ha, ha xx

Claudine, I have bronchiectasis. Because of this and my lack of white blood cells (Neutropoenia) I get recurring nasty infections. I start feeling unwell, then I don't feel like eating and I loose 5 kg (11 lb) in two weeks!

Then I get better and make an effort in eating better, whole milk, Cashew nuts and rains in Cornflakes in the morning, Turkey steaks and vegetables. Lots of little creams etc nd I do regain my weight.

But every time I have a chest infection, my weight plummets, because my body struggles against the infection.

Not easy for me to keep a balance!

That's interesting because I'm recovering from Pseudomonas Aeruginosa which I think I've had some time so am having two courses of antibios back to back. I thought my weight was stable up until recently so that may well be the explanation. Will feed myself up when I'm recovered!

Take care of yourself and combat this pseudomonas. It's a tenacious bug. I'm glad that you can go to the gym. I do this too when I feel better. That always seems to boost my energy up. In 2011 I was with oxygen at home and on the move. I went to the gym and 2 months later, I did not need oxygen aid any more! So yes! The gym is a saviour. pseudomonas, keep off my friend!

When I was first diagnosed last May with bronchiectasis, I was really poorly and had lost 2 stone in two years. My consultant told me that my body was trying to oxygenate itself which uses up a lot of energy... hence the weight loss. I have now regained a stone and take maintenance steroids, carbocysteine and calcium supplement daily ,along with spiriva and ventolin. I have a supply of antibiotics should I need them. I have had one hospital stay of two weeks since last MAY and although am not cured feel amazingly well in comparason to before my diagnosis. Hope this helps... Holly. xxx

Thank you for this. I'm getting the picture now. The annoying thing is I submitted two samples to GP in January and both came back clear. This was clearly wrong and that's when I ended up with a specialist which resulted in a bronchoscopy. This revealed 'quite a lot' of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa which explained all the breathlessness and tiredness. He said I can safely assume any infection will be this as it's colonised. He has also given me a backup prescription to save time in future. In the meantime, have increased my Mucodyne and continue on Seretide and Spiriva. Glad it's made so much difference for you.

Dear All I too have suffered weight loss 3stones since diagnosis.(over2yrs)

Told was because could not breathe and eat at same time so eating less, then stomach shrunk, also drink a lot more fluids so that also fills you up.

I put a few pounds on while on steroids but try to maintain a steady weight by having extra protein shakes when unable to eat.
