Hi Steph57, except for hiatius hernia, all other hernias are usually repaired with surgery. If a person is fit some can be repaired Laproscopically these days with just a day care stay at hospital. Some people have them repaired without general anaesthetic too. Usually the new criteria is not to repair unless the hernia becomes large or painful. Dependent on where it is you can get a support fitted to hold it in until repair is done, but that treatment is a bit old fashioned these days. Speaking from experience the new mesh method they use is very successful, I had a repair seven years ago and have had no re-occurrence. But have another hernia which has become painful and have been assessed and accepted for surgery. I had my previous hernia for ten years without any problems. This one has been here 2and a half years, but gives me pain on and off now for several months. Everyone is different do you have a hernia ?

Hi katieoxo I've not been to see the doctor yet but sometimes when I strain coughing or bend down a lump comes up as if something has dislodged from under my ribs on the right hand side I rub it and try to stretch till it goes back. Does this sound like a hernia? X

It does sound like an Hernia especially as it goes back and comes out when you cough, apparently this type of hernia is common in people with lung related coughs. You do need to see your GP for a decision that it is definitely an hernia and what treatment will be given. You may have to attend hospital for this. Don't worry too much but your doctor needs to know and get the details down on record. Thinking of you take care X

Hi Thatcham, just to change the subject a little how do you deal with your hernia pain? The pain is quite bad and I struggle to deal with it thought you might have a bit of advice on it, problem shared is problem halved and repairs do work although they can come

back as your doctor says.

thanks for the reply, I had to do something this afternoon, top up painkillers seems to have eased off for now. I find rubbing the area helps a little it's a pain so to say hopefully it will be better tomorrow for a few days, I've even sprayed it with things like deep heat , anythings worth a go . Thanks again for advice, Jan.

I endorse katieoxo60. My husband had his first repaired laparoscopically and the second with an epidural local. Apparently they don't do laproscopics under local. He had a local because he has COPD and a General was not advised.

Thanks for that Candles34, I wasn't given any choice just open surgery with general aneasethic even though I have diagnosed COPD but was warned of the risks including breathing difficulty
