I thought that it was time to see if the rest had done me good or bad. I was feeling good but I was a little unsure what lay ahead, anyway oxygen on 6 litres, watch was exactly on 6 o-clock so off I went. The first couple of hundred yards are on the level so ok there but then the Hill starts along a bridleway. I've never met any horses on it but the evidence is on the ground that they pass this way.
I'm puffing now which starts the coughing off, followed by my sputum joining the horse manure on the ground.
There are peoples back gardens backing on to the bridle way and if anybody's sat out they must here me go by as I'm sounding like a beginner finishing a marathon. The thing is I'm only walking at what most people would consider to be a gentle stroll. Anyway enough of the self pity, I'm now at my next check point and realise my time is good so now all I have to do is complete the final leg. Of course its the hardest bit, a long straight, up a fairly steep incline. I try and concentrate on my breathing and not on the stitch that is beginning under my right rib cage. Cars are driving by and I smell their exhaust fumes, I kind of wonder for a second if its the air pollution that has killed my lungs and try to keep my mind off the physical uncomfortable feeling that is taking over my body. I keep going past places that were rest points 12 months ago and finally reach the top. The watch was kind to me as the time was 6.17 and 15 secs. Yahoo another new record. Ok it was only 45 secs off the last one but after all the heat and rest time I kind of thought I may have lost something in my fitness.
All is well in the Dall05 camp tonight and I even treated myself to a bit/lot of chocolate cake.
At the moment I'm beating this thing called Pulmonary Fibrosis and that's the way its gonna stay. My last spirometry showed another slight improvement too so things are heading in the right direction.
Exercise does work but I'm afraid it also hurt's quite a bit too. I hate the saying 'no pain no gain' but its blinkin true.
Tony Look after yourselves and never say never, anything is possible with a little determination.
Oh yes that's me in the photo, as you can see I'm not very good in the heat. Ha Ha

Thanks peeg, records are there to be broken and it does make you feel good too. My timed walks have proved very handy over the years to measure how well I am doing.
There have been ups and downs along the way but I've not seen improvement on this scale before.
I can only put it down to the weight loss and the harder exercise regime that I have enforced on myself since the Olympics.
Maybe its the smell from the horse poo that's clearing the lungs, Should I suggest a clinical trial.
I wonder if I could get many volunteers to clean out a local stables? Ha Ha
Well done Dall, you should be proud of yourself, and yes, and I know go on about it when I can, exercise IS the best medicine we can take. I did 40 minutes today as well but NOT uphill. Take care. Adrian
Thanks Adrian, your dam right about exercising, it beats any pill the doc's can offer from my experience. Well done on your 40 mins and only do the hills when your ready.
Keep up the good work and you'll reap the rewards.
Tony , this is a bit late for me, but have had friends round for dinner and lots of drinks. Thanks for your comments, my routine is 40 minutes 4 days a week and 3 days I go walking, usually to my local ! But I keep active by helping Carmen by cleaning, hoover, sweep the front garden, mow lawn and so on. Shame is I can't do many of the things liked doing such as painting the woodwork an making good etc. Can't risk the dust or fumes....and I do miss that sort of thing.

Absolutely fantastic that is no mean feat! Well done you should be very proud long may you continue Take good care tad x x
Thanks Tad, Its been a pretty tough 3 years, so its great to see a little success from all the hard work that's been done.
It seems that weight loss and exercise together have made a better me. and I intend to keep searching for more improvement not just for myself but to help others on the site if I can.
Tony
Well done Tony, you are a fine example of keeping on keeping on
Evening is a good time to stroll but don't overdo it in the heat.
Your right about avoiding the heat, that's why I've not done a lot of exercise over the last couple of weeks but its a little cooler now so its time to push on and search for more improvement.
That pic was taken by my daughter and I thought it kind of sums up how I am when things get hot, blinkin hopeless.
I do feel pleased with the way things are going and hopefully I can keep the improvements going.
Its good to hear from you, i hope you and Harry are having a better run of luck now. I've fallen behind as most of us have, struggling with the new site but things are improving now.
It doesn't seem so long ago that you were in a heat wave and we were digging ourselves out through deep snow. Its us now that's in the heat wave, have you got your snow shovels ready
That pic is kind of funny isn't it, not really my best angle though and you have probably already guessed I'm not terribly good in the heat Ha Ha
I do love my music but I remember breaking a few of the mistakes I bought when I was young. I remember shooting a Donny Osmond single to pieces with my air gun to destroy all the evidence and a Gary Glitter one went the same way too.
You remind me of the Englishman who climbed up a hill and walked down a mountain - boxing gloves on way to do round two with PF - whack it in the eye! xx
The gloves are off for now because you have to fight dirty to beat PF. It doesn't seem to like exercise so I'm giving it plenty of that at the moment which hopefully will keep it pinned in a corner until I can find the knock out blow. Av It PF and some more.
Hi Tony Well done mate, does not matter if it's 45 seconds or 45 minutes it's knowing you can beat the time before, I have 2 bad days with the RA mostly above the waist so I am out doing my 3 mile walk if it stays dry if not in the gym on the treadmill for 1 hour my pace, keep breaking the records. MC
I love your determination MC, I think were very similar in our approach to this disease and were doing alright so were on the right track. Doctors can only do so much, its up to us to do the rest in any way we can.
I hope your RA gives it a rest soon, it must be a real downer when that rears its ugly head, Its something hopefully I'll never have to deal with but if I do I'll know who to call on, MC and his coach Fran.
