silent reflux & asthma

I was started on omepraze and gaviscon treatment for the above 2 weeks ago after an exacerbation of asthma. I think it has helped but not entirely sure as early days. I’ve only been given a months supply. Does anyone know if this is something you’d expect to be on indefinitely if it does work? I also wonder if anyone just takes omeprazole & finds it works? I find it really difficult to remember to take the gaviscon and you need huge quantities! Thanks.

I take Omeprazole, and if I don’t miss a day of taking, it works for me.

Thanks! Do you take gaviscon as well?

Not Gaviscon no, but I always have antacids to hand. I don’t know what causes the heartburn.

I have been on Omeprazole and Gaviscon as long as I can remember. They work fine - I never though eat spicy food.

I've been taking omeprazole and Gaviscon Advance for a couple of years now, but I can only take Gaviscon at night before bed because it interferes with meds I take during the day for rheumatoid arthritis.

Gaviscon Advance is supposed to be better than regular Gaviscon for silent reflux, and there's not much evidence that omeprazole is helpful unless you' re taking it morning AND night (it works better for GERD)

You should also look at your diet and try to cut out trigger foods and drinks, such as tomatoes, onion, garlic, chilli, peppermint, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol and carbonated drinks.

Having a restricted diet is the major thing that keeps my silent reflux under control, and my asthma has been a hundred times better for it.

Thank you. I’m on twice a day omeprazole. Will check with the dr to see what I need going forward.

I was on both too. I have changed what, when and how much I eat and now I use either very rarely, probably 3 or 4 times a year. My breathing has improved significantly and I have lost the unwanted weight which also is better for my overall health but especially the asthma. I have cut out obvious trigger foods such as chilli, vinegar and fried foo. I no longer eat dairy at all and I make my own fermented foods such as sauerkraut and sourdough bread. I feel a million times better These changes have worked very well for me. I hope you find a way to manage your reflux etc and you feel better soon.

Omeprazole has helped a lot and can work on its own. I have Gaviscon or equivalent on standby buy don’t often need it.

I checked my asthma attacks over a month and about a third were linked to food. The consultant put me on tablets that stopped this.

However I have found that by simply not having heavy meals I can achieve the same result.

I’ve taken omeprazole for acid reflux for 15 years, no evidence that it has helped with controlling my asthmatic attacks.

Please Google side affects of omeprazole, I don't think it is a good thing to take for too long

I used to have trouble with this, but found that eating smaller meals, not lying flat, avoiding clothes with waistbands that dig in and getting my weight down a bit have all helped, and I now rarely get trouble. I know it doesn't help everyone, but it might be worth trying.

I am prescribed both but was told to use the gaviscon as a cough medicine as the silent reflux can scar your airways

I take Lansoprazol in the morning, Famotidine before bed and Gaviscon Advance after every meal and before bed.

Quite frankly, trying to fit in the Gaviscon around other meds is a pain in the backside, but, if you can remember to take it, it DOES work!

The jury is out regarding long term use of Omeprazole and Lanprazol, I believe, but Gaviscon (all kinds) seem to be in favour to use for as long as you need to. Be aware that anything with peppermint in can relax the sphincter that stops the acid rising into your oesophagus , so the aniseed flavour one is probably best (although i.m.o. it tastes disgusting!).

In the USA. Original gaviscon is banned because it contains carcinogens.

Interesting. Haven't seen anything about that over here. Xx Moy

Hi all,

I was put on gaviscon advanced and omeprazole 9 months ago, helped my silent reflux but not my asthma. Changes to my diet however have helped dramatically. Dairy and weirdly cocoa of any kind, so mainly in chocolate obvs, I’ve discovered we’re causing me to feel like I was ongoing having a low level asthma attack. Cutting these trigger foods out have also taken my post nasal drip down from a constant swallowing of mucus down the back of my throat and subsequent coughing up, to minimal mucus, coughing once or twice a day, I still take gaviscon advanced and omeprazole for a few days at a time here and there if I feel the reflux but like I say for my asthma I’ve good food groups above are biggest triggers.

Omprazole didn’t work but after a very helpful consultant suggested the less will know Pantoprazole I’ve been super well. Acid reflex can exacerbate asthma and many asthmatics are not open to the suggestion that it may be a factor so great that you are being treated so holistically. Acid reflux can be the result of being overweight, drinking too much, or a reaction to certain foods - really really worth working on this area of your health as it made a huge difference to me

Thank goodness I found this thread. I have asthma and acid reflux too and didn't realise that that you could have both. I honestly thought there was something seriously wrong with my lungs. I've just been put back on lanszaparol and have the blue inhaler and the white powder pump. I love vinegar but maybe time for me to give this up
