This is a link to fairly good guide to dysfunctional breathing. I assume you've been referred to a respiratory physiotherapist in order to address this, if not, then request a referral.

You've also asked about problems when eating. The physiotherapist will be able to assess your specific breathing challenges and suggest exercises to correct any dysfunction, including your breathing patterns while eating. Learning to nose breath rather than through the mouth can be a game changer.
