Asthma and reflux

Hi all

I do suffer from reflux and I have noticed at times when I feel a bit breathless/can’t take a full satisfying breath that I have heartburn.

Can reflux effect are asthma like this? I don’t really know much about how reflux effects asthma

Hi my consultant said it can effect integestion, he prescribed omperazole daily, it makes a slight difference been on it over year, the gp didn't quite understand why I was on it your prob best asking consultant.

Hi, yes reflux can definitely affect asthma. For some people it's a trigger for their asthma and for others it's actually the reflux causing the symptoms and not their asthma as the symptoms can be very similar.

Asthma and reflux can be self-perpetuating. Acid reflux irritates the lungs which makes them close up and makes you cough. The extra effort needed to get air in and out as well as the steroid inhalers, weaken the sphincter between the stomach and oesophagus, causing reflux. It's a vicious circle.
