I have severe asthma that is hard for me to deal with particularly in the winter when it’s cold and there are lots of germs to deal with.
Previously I’ve been recommended to wear a mask or cover my mouth in order to avoid germs and also keep the air warm around my mouth.
I sewed myself some pretty face masks out of cotton so that I would feel less obvious however I still feel super self conscious wearing them. People avoid me and stare and it makes me feel even weirder than I already feel being 20 years old and sometimes struggling up stairs.
To add to this the other day on my way to the corner shop I was coughing, as per usual because I HAVE ASTHMA. A random man who I believe was drunk started having a go at me telling me I could have coronavirus and should stay away from people. Not only did this embarrass me but it also made me feel even more self conscious about wearing anything else that might make me look “sick”
Does anyone have any tips for not feeling self conscious around looking “sick”

I’ve been wearing respimasks for years on the very odd occasion that I go out, and it is difficult when people stare and point, but they are not the ones fighting for breath if they catch a simple cold. I grant it’s not an ideal way to live, but neither is being ill. If they are close enough and they are either staring or giving you side glances, then try responding and telling them you have a lung condition, most people are quite friendly and understanding. I’ve found a lot of them very helpful as well if you are struggling and breathless.
There are mixed messages with regards to masks. The ones I use comply to the N95 rating, adhere to the face so that your not having to adjust it and it reduces the gaps to prevent taking in unfiltered air, and I discard it after each use (no longer than 15 minutes).
I wear a snood (black neck warmer thing that I can cover my nose and mouth with as well). It’s comfy, keeps the cold air out, and looks good. You could also wear a mask underneath for added protection, which wouldn’t be seen,
