Hi, a rheumatologist is someone who deals with pain and inflammation of the musculoskeletal system. They treat people with rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and similar conditions.

I've got muscular pain I think, well I have it's all around my boob, had x-ray and bloods and they have come back alright, but this pain is unbearable! Last year I had similar pain and after easy 2 years i was informed by my consultant that I had a abscess on my right lung! I'm just trying to understand what is happening as never been referred to this kind of doctors and I am finding it difficult to understand what this all means. So this Dr will help me with this pain?and there was a discussion about maybe I may need a steroid injection by my lung every 3 months and that is freaking me out,if I have this does anyone know if I would be put asleep?

Hello, sounds like you need to ask a doctor to explain what is happening. At our local hospital the rheumatology department is excellent and they really listen and check you out and will provide pain management if it is needed.

If you have a lung abcess I would think that would come under the Respiratory department. If you do need an injection there is no need to have an anaesthetic. They will numb the area where they are injecting - make sure you ask for this to be done - and for some types of treatment they may give you medication to make you sleepy and less anxious without actaully 'putting you asleep'. You can talk to them before hand.

Hope you get things sorted and feel better soon.

Thankyou so much for your advice, last year I had the abscess, and this year I've had severe pain around my boob! They mentioned about a steroid injection every 3 months, and I am terrified! I seriously need to be normal! I've always got chest infections and it's that bad I'm not allowed to be anyway near someone who has a cold, depressing or what! Suffer with depression and I'm also under the mental health but I know there are people far worse so I need to get on with it.sorry for going on, hope all is well with you.

Sorry that it is hard for you at the moment. We are all different. I was a nurse so hospitals don't bother me, but my husband hates going to them. Take care - mentally and physically - and get the advice and information which works for you. All the best.x
