Out grow of asthma?
There is always that possibility. Early treatment is key. As he grows, his airway will bigger.
Yes there is a possibility. I had asthma as a child, became wheezy when exercising and 2/3 exacerbation a year when I was confined to bed for a couple of weeks (all pre inhaler days), this all seemed to subside from about 8 and I was symptom free by early teens. Unfortunately for me it came back, in a different variation, at about 45 and has stayed with me since.
I have had asthma since I was two. My mother had asthma when she was a child. She outgrew her asthma. She's in her 60's now and hasn't had a problem since she was a child. I was always told that I would outgrow asthma. However, I never did. I would say my 20's were probably a bit better. I had some hospitalisations when I was a teenager, but none in my 20's and then it started again when I was about 32-35. Now I am really bad. So I guess it all depends on the individual.
There is no proof that anyone has ever grown out of asthma, it is a myth that you can outgrow asthma.
There is the possibility that as a child you have asthma and then later in life the asthma disappears but this is very very unlikely.
The triggers for asthma can come and go and as an adult the asthma may have fewer symptoms as the body is bigger and stronger but this does not mean the asthma has gone just less noticeable.
I had understood that children can grow out of asthma and my eldest son did. Whether permanent or not, I couldn't say (he's 31 now), but it's certainly a good thing. But, as I said in another post only today, personal experience is not necessarily typical, but in my son's case and yours, I sincerely hope it is!
My uncle seems to have done - bad asthma as a child then after about 14 not really an issue (may have been much better controlled if he had been a child when steroid inhalers etc were available. My grandfather apparently never did grow out of it.
I thought I had - mild from age 7 then gradually better till no inhaler at uni- but I now know I still had it. Then swine flu brought it back and now it's much worse than it ever was as a child. Mostly I meet people who had it the other way round ie better now than as a child, but they still have it.
I would say it might be possible but I would be careful and not assume it has gone. Given my experience I might also suggest getting flu jabs even when you think the asthma is no longer an issue. Yes I know they're not perfect but it gives some protection and I have learned flu can really play havoc with asthma even if mild! In general also be aware it may come back and never ignore the symptoms. I know it was silly now to ignore those symptoms at uni even though nothing bad came of them - but the right combination of triggers and it could have been trouble. I was so clueless about asthma though!
They can but it often recurs in adulthood. This happened to both me and my sister .🤗
In my mind I think that there's a lot of posts that come on here from people who say they thought they'd grown out of it then it reappeared later in adult life. My suspicion is nobody ever grows out of it. Some people get it under control & maybe get lucky that it doesn't get re-triggered but there's enough evidence of it coming back to say that it's risky to presume.
Having said that, if you can reach a point in life where you are symptom & medicine-free, you might as well enjoy it!
