If you don't smoke and exercise, you will always have a good lung capacity.
Sharon 49: If you don't smoke and... - Asthma Community ...
Sharon 49
I've never smoked. I used to walk, cycle, referee football matches. Sadly, I also have a lung disease & I'm knackered with it.
You can't even begin to imagine how much I wish what you say was true.
Do you mean that if you don't smoke and do excerise then you have always have good lung capacity?
I have never smoked and excerise regularly. I have asthma and yes when my asthma is well controlled I have an excellent peak flow. I have adult onset asthma which cannot be cured but is being treated very well.
I don't want to judge too quickly, & maybe this is someone who has questions, but the poster has joined the forum today & made 2 posts telling us how healthy they are & that the rest of us need to get fit & stop smoking.
It's a slightly bizarre way to introduce yourself I think!
I think she is asking a question
Hopefully she will come back & clarify. I always get a little touchy about people who join & start telling us straight away how they have fixed or cured asthma!
I really hope she is asking a question really do
I hope so. I feel like this is one of the few places we can come to get away from crap like "You must have X because you are lazy and don't take care of yourself if you just do Y you'll be perfect like meeeeee!" Which is how she's coming over at the mo.
I was born Asthmatic and had pneumonia at 6months my poor little lungs were screwed. I can only run in short burst so I do that and whatever I can. I can get out of puff too easily sometimes but I recover quickly.
I think she is too. From what I have read Sharon is .... an asthmatic diagnosis in her 20's with allergic asthma?! Is a fitness instructor and does breathing excerise everyday. Wants to understand peak flow reading for her age, gender and height.
Yes I agree that not smoking with definitely help anyway be healthier than a smoker. As for lung capacity it depends on the individual genetic makeup for a non asthmatic.
Asthmatic aren't all the same in their experiences of their health. Mine is not as severe as some here with brittle asthma nor as mild as someone who just needs a ventolin inhaler.
If Sharon wants to really understood asthma well may I direct her to asthma UK where Sharon can read up on the latest health advice on asthma. They are in my opinion are the good standard of asthma inform for the layman seeking advice.
So the other commenters have cleared that up!
I've known people who smoked and exercised and had great lung capacity.... Just to throw an entirely new thought into this 😂
Body's don't seem to follow our rules and thoughts....
Environmental assault and the individuals susceptibility to it is a much stronger culprit to look at as opposed to just smoking. Microbes can cause horrendous inflammation in the lungs without bothering the actual capacity too much at all.
Just to join the others — I have a great lung capacity and exercise helps a great deal with my asthma. I’m running a half marathon next month. But if I get a bad virus or a chest infection I can hardly get up the stairs.
As indicated above from other posts what you say is not true. I don't smoke, it's a trigger for me walking in town can be a nightmare. When not in asthma episode I do exercise. However, my lung capacity is still low even when symptom free.
Err no there are many variables. Also allergies do affect your lungs with amounts if inflamation. Exercise helps with asthma if you are in a state where your asthma is able to let you exercise. No asthmatic is the same. Peak flow is variable and there are lots of people who don't fit in a peak flow box.
Well I hate to disagree with you, and find your comment slightly annoying. I have never smoked, never drunk alcohol, never used any non prescription drugs, and prior to my asthma spiralling out of control participated in 10km runs.
Now if I can climb stairs and not be out of breath I feel I have achieved something.
Still would love to be able to join in with family more, but as this time last year the family were called to say farewells as I was rushed to ICU.... I count myself lucky.
It does annoy me when in hospital bei g surrounded by people who smoke ( it was one of these patients smoking in bathroom in hospital landed me in ICU) , so please don't make a sweeping statement.
Hugs Woopdy! What a miraculous survival!!! I do pray you're using every extra day to accomplish great things!!! I pray you impart all the additional knowledge and learning to everyone you connect with. I am also a receiver of this type of miracle, so I can hardly shut up about it 😄😘
Like you I found the comment a bit annoying. I try not to jump in on people as I know some people find it hard to articulate their thoughts, but this seems like one of those people who, for reasons I never fully understand, want to imply they have discovered something the rest of us haven't. Or, perhaps even worse, wants to imply that it's our own fault we are ill.
If I get time, I'm going to try & write something as we do get these kind of posts from time to time & I don't think any of us are totally sure how to get the balance between clumsily written but genuine post versus wind-up merchant/snake oil sellers.
I agree I want to be open minded when reading any post. I have myself never smoked and have a great peak flow 500 which should be around 420. My asthma is at present very well controlled on a combination inhaler and monkelaust tablet. When I am well I get on with my life just like everyone else. I swim,do aqua fit and Pilates. Work and look after my husband and family.
If there's one thing that was drummed into me from an early age, it was don't smoke! My asthma was bad enough through my childhood & teens to realise I could do without making it worse. And although exercise has always been a bit of a strain, I used to cycle daily (& I live in an area where there's not a flat road for miles around) & get other exercise. None of that stopped me getting more ill though later in life, so if nothing else, Sharon's post is factually wrong & somewhat judgemental. I keep hoping if there's a genuine query or thought in there, she'll come back & clear it up, but I am now of a view that this is one of those odd 'miracle cure' posts we get from time to time.
If only that were true!
ha! Please explain why I am fit- gym four times a week plus swimming and a physically demanding job. I have never smoked or done drugs. As for alcohol, a bottle of gin lasts me four or more years and it’s the only thing I do drink alcohol wise. Yes I still end up in a and e for asthma and have two bags of asthma drugs and associated paraphernalia.
