Hoping one of the Asthma UK Team might have time to answer this one, but happy for anyone else to comment too.
Understand that Asthma Airway Obstruction comes in two main forms.
1. Mucus Plugging (airways blocked with dense plugs of mucus)
2. Airway Remodelling (structural airway changes that occur over time)
Gather Asthma Patients - for whom Lung Function ‘Tests’ reveal Airway Obstruction - may have one (or both) of the above.
Also understand that one or two of the Biological Medicines (mabs) can - to some extent - improve Lung Function, but what I’m unclear about, is whether ‘any’ Bilogical / Mab (or any other medical treatment currently available) achieves Lung Function Improvement by (partially) reversing Airway Remodelling?
Believe some Stem Cell Treatments (still at the Research Stage) ‘might’ - in the future - offer some degree of Airway Remodelling ‘Reversibility’ (but that’s about it).
I appreciate some of the newer Biologicals / Mabs (not currently available on the NHS) do offer some Lung Function Improvement. I’d like to understand if that Lung Function Improvement is achieved by reversing Airway Remodelling or if the Lung Function Improvement from those MABs result from something ‘other than’ partial-reversal of Airway Remodelling?
Thanks in adavance for any info you can provide.
