Elevated ige

The doctor says to me it means "I'm an allergic person ".... anyone got anything more usefullike than that?

Googling suggests it's a sign that I have an allergy but then I also read something about doctors using it as just one of a few indicators (one of the others being a family history)

So can anyone tell me anymore?

Thanks

Chip

Morning. I too have very elevated igE antibodies all the time. In my case something in the production of the igE antibodies is broken. Meaning my body keeps producing more even though there is already too much in my body. This led my body to get confused and start thinking it was under attack from allergens (pollen, dust, cat hair etc) all the time. So my asthma kept getting worse and worse, my hospital admissions got more and I found I was on steroids constantly to suppress the igE and control my asthma. The steroids slow down the whole immune system in order to help reduce inflammation in the lungs. A side effevt is that igE production is also stopped in the immune sytem. I am now in xolair treatment once a month. This is injections of lab made antibodies that bond with igE and stop it from working. This allows for steroids to be reduced again so rest of immune sytem can wirk as normal. Since starting my asthma is so much better. The only time I have any problems now is the week before treatment. As my levels get higher again. Hope this helps a bit. 😊

There is a lot of research going on into IgE structure, function and regulation, and the current treatment for those with asthma is often to give Xolair. However, that is a very expensive medication and you'll need to be very poorly to get it, as Roland1 is.

IgE - I think- is the name given to the molecule that decides whether you are allergic to something or not. Being allergic doesn't always mean you have asthma - you could have any number of reactions such as being sick, rashes and so on, which is why your GP sees it as just one aspect of your condition. The research is trying to find out why IgE goes into overdrive and if it is possible to calm it down without making the rest of the body suffer; and ideally, to prevent it happening at all. Personally, I don't think that telling you that well, you're just an allergic person is much help at all - it depends what is going to happen next. Maybe you can cope with over the counter anti-histamines and see how it goes.

Here's wishing you good health!

Hi ...... I also have elevated ige levels, waited two years and loads of tests before I finaly got the xolair treatment. Have just finished my 3rd monthly treatment. Am still on a maintenance of pred ((25mg)) hoping that I'll be able to come off soon.

Have you had any allergy tests ? (Skin prick) or bloods to test your ige levels ?

Just a thought but do you take an antihistamine ?

Well the doctors told me not to because she wanted to follow up with the lab but I've got to wait until 10th October as that's the next appointment she canceled my last one as she was off sick
