Hi Katielou

I asked that question recently and was told to check with the GP. Good luck.

Hi Katielou,

It's a very good question, and one that I'm not sure I can fully answer.

Some illnesses, especially viral illnesses, do suppress the immune system slightly, which would mean that the 'flu vaccine could be slightly less effective in causing your body to produce the antibodies necessary. If it is done at a time when you are well, there is a chance that it will be more effective.

Also, the 'flu vaccine can cause a mild reaction characterised by fever, general malaise and aches and pains. Obviously, if you are already unwell, this is going to be more unpleasant for you.

Very very rarely, the neurological condition Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is seen after having a 'flu jab. It's not known whether these cases are due to the 'flu jab or are just coincidence - Guillain-Barre can be triggered by respiratory and gastrointestinal viral infections, which are obviously more common around the time of year that the 'flu jab is given, so the apparent association may just be co-incidence. There is some suggestion, though, that if the jab is given when you already have a febrile illness, it may increase the (very tiny) risk of GBS.

The BNF recommends that you should not have the 'flu jab at a time when you have a fever or are systemically unwell. Minor infections such as colds, conjunctivitis, and so on should not really be a contraindication, but if in doubt, do talk to your doctor or practice nurse about it.

Hope this helps,

Em
